Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I wrote this book as a means of providing a framework for understanding the complex process through which health policy is made in the United States for my students in health policy. Over a number of years, the model of the process that is the heart of this book was developed in class interactions with many students. As a result, the model is quite useful as a framework for understanding the process.

The main purpose of the book is to provide a framework for students upon which they can develop an understanding of the public policymaking process, especially as it applies to the development of health policy at the federal and state levels of government. There is much more that can be said about policymaking than is covered in this book. However, the book does provide a comprehensive model that can serve the reader as a very useful framework for getting an overview of the policymaking process.

Important chapters? Actually, because the chapters address particular components of the policymaking process model, each is important in its own way. I think the book's organization around the policymaking process model is an important feature that gives the reader an opportunity to see the overall process, and then gain some depth in each component of the process.

The book has a very specific purpose: to help readers gain an understanding of and an appreciation for the complex process through which health policy is made in the United States. Its impact is through what people who gain this understanding are able to do with the knowledge and information. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs some polishing, February 15, 2010

This review is from: Health Policymaking in the United States, Fourth Edition (Hardcover)
This book has some good content but needs some polishing. This book is the assigned text for 1 of my Master's classes. In each chapter, you can probably read the 1st paragraph and then skip the next 2 - 3 pages. The book makes too many repetitive statements. The same point will be made over and over again in only slightly different wording. Needs a good editor to hack away at it and then the book could probably be reduced by at least 1/4.
