Book Description

March 18, 1999 0415920817 978-0415920810 1
For the first time, life expectancy is declining in an industrialized society. In this pioneering work, William C. Cockerham examines the social causes of the decline in life expectancy beginning in the 1960s including:
*Russia
*Poland
*Hungary
*Romania
*Bulgaria
*the Czech Republic
*and East Germany.
Health and Social Change in Russia and Eastern Europe argues that the roots of this change are mainly social rather than biomedical - the result of poor policy decisions, stress and an unhealthy diet. Cockerham presents a theory of postmodern social change that goes beyond the borders of Eastern Europe.

Editorial Reviews

Review

All of the empirical and theoretical arguments are succinctly presented, and are quite easy to follow even by those who know very little about social determinants of health or about the former communist countries in East Central Europe. Health and Social Change in Russia and Eastern Europe therefore meets the needs of various constituencies, and is highly recommended both to specialists and to those lacking familiarity with sociology, public health and/or East Central Europe..
