About the Author

A healthcare consultant and international medical reporter, Michelle Katz is the host of Today's Health. She has been a senior healthcare consultant at Arthur Andersen and consulted in the development of congressional healthcare legislation. She received her master's degree in nursing from Georgetown University and lives in Washington, D.C.

More About the Author

Michelle Katz, MSN, LPN has over 15 years of experience navigating through the healthcare background with an extensive background in healthcare: clinically, administratively, and politically. Her healthcare advocacy stems from a car accident she personally had years ago resulting in over $150k in uninsured medical bills, which she negotiated down to around $5k. She once again assisted a loved one, with health insurance, by negotiating the victim's bills from $210k to $2,500. Michelle shares these successful negotiating tactics and cost saving tips in her books: "Healthcare for Less", "101 Health Insurance Tips," and her new book due to come out in November 2014, "Healthcare Made Easy."

Currently, Michelle serves as the "healthcare consumer advocate" for ABC News and continues to lecture across the country on various healthcare topics including getting the best out of your health insurance while navigating through the Affordable Care Act changes (as a business, provider and patient).

After watching Michelle Katz on ABC World News Tonight on February 25th she and the subject matter peaked my interest. I saw how she was able to work with a couple to bring their monthly perscription bill down to $400+ from over $20,000.00. This book is an easy to read and guide that helps direct you in the right direction to savings offering avenues that would be unknown otherwise. Instead of going outside of the USA to find cheaper drugs and not knowing their true origin you can literally go right across the street or down the block and save. Thank you Michelle. You are helping so many. This book should be on everyones shelf or in everyones Kindle.

I was surprised and finally relieved to find a book that narrows down the information I need to help my family make better decisions on choosing the right health care. With prescription costs rising and insurance packages being so confusing, this has already helped us make sense of some of the questions we didn't even know to ask.

This book is an excellent resource for people trying to find a way to get affordable health care. It's geared mostly towards people with insurance who have to navigate the health care system while trying to save costs. The one thing that isn't addressed in the book is the 'free market' in health care that many self-pay patients (primarily the uninsured and those with high-deductible insurance, but also some with 'comprehensive' insurance who can't get a needed treatment or provider covered) are able to use to get affordable health care. Options like cash-only doctors, medical tourism, and other alternatives to the system that most of the insured participate in can be big money savers.

That said, Healthcare for Less is a helpful source of information on how to save money while getting the healthcare you need.

Healthcare For Less: Getting The Care You Need Without Breaking the Bank by Michelle Katz M.S.N. (host of cable Television show Today's Health) is an extremely practical primer to the financial lingo of healthcare plans, Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), Medicare and Medicaid, coverage for those in the military, COBRA, and much more. Tips to save money range from basic prevention advice to keep oneself in good health, to learning how exactly to read a medical bill, to negotiation strategies with healthcare institutions and providers. In the modern era of spiraling prescription and health care prices, Healthcare For Less is strongly recommended for all but the wealthiest Americans.

Healthcare for Less is an excellent resource for helping people to navigate and save money in our healthcare system. My first try at using the information I read in Michelle's book was a huge success. It saved me over $600 dollars for a diagnostic MRI. If I had not read the book I would never have known about the national 211 organization. The organization Michelle writes about is a national organization with local chapters that provide referrals for a variety of human services. Through this organization I was referred to a diagnostic center that would charge me half that of the other regional diagonstic centers I had contacted for an MRI. If it weren't for the book I would be $600 dollars deeper in medical debt.Thank you Healthcare for Less!
