I started cooking for our Beagle puppy at 5 months old using the book, The Whole Pet Diet by Andi Brown. In addition to a few recipes for dogs, she provides wonderful recipes for pet vitamin supplements. Once I was comfortable with the concept of cooking for our puppy, I began my search for an aditional cookbook. This one is great. It is full of easy recipes that can be cooked quickly. It also provides quick health tips and recommended portion sizes for your dog. To each meal, I add the vitamin powder supplement and coat oil supplement from Brown's book. Our puppy is now 9 months old and he sports a vibrant coat and great smelling breath.

I was looking for a book, that would include receipes for treats, meals, and overall dog health. This has everything, and always includes a vet's opinion, which I think is very helpful!

Until I purchased this book, I was only considering making my dogs treats and meals. This book convinced me to go for it. I found almost all of the recipes to be easily explained using a minimal amount of ingredients... therefore making it a reasonable thing to do. I know for sure I will be making all of his treats from now on. Not only will be it be healthier but will also cost less and last just as long! I'm excited to try some of the recipes!!

If you are looking for an easy guide to cooking for your dog, this is a great book!

My three dogs have "delicate" (insert "barf a lot") systems so we decided to switch to home cooked meals for them. And we didn't want to spend more time or money than we have. After receiving this cookbook I may put the two humans in the home on this diet! Great easy recipes and happy, playful dogs without the return of their meals (insert "delicate" again). This is a must have cookbook for your dogs. Start with this book.

THE ULTIMATE REASON I DECIDED TO HOMECOOK FOR MY PRECIOUS BEAGLE IS BECAUSE OF ALL THE ALLERGENS ....BESIDES ALL THE OTHER GARBAGE IN PET FOOD...........THATS IN THE COMMERCIAL DOG FOODS! I DIDNT NEED A BOOK ON HOW TO HOME COOK THAT WAS GOING TO HAVE THE "BIGGEST" ALLERGEN "WHEAT" IN ALL THE RECIPES!
THE BOOK ALSO TELLS YOU WHAT YOUR DOG SHOULD BE HAVING BUT DOESNT EXPLAIN HOW TO GET WHERE TO GET ITS ALL VERY VAGUE! I DIDNT EVEN WANT TO GIVE IT ONE STAR!

4.0 out of 5 stars Puppies thankful for this book!, August 12, 2009
This review is from: The Healthy Dog Cookbook: 50 Nutritious & Delicious Recipes Your Dog Will Love (Spiral-bound)
My pups love this book since I have been making such yummy dinners for them. During this very hot weather they have been especially enjoying the yogurt pops (banana, yogurt, peanut butter - frozen) I've been making for them. The recipes are very easy, with 4-6 ingredients and not at all difficult to make. I like having the calorie counts with each recipe as well. I would like to have a label more like the "human" product labels that show vitamin/mineral content quantities and such since I'm always nervous about providing them enough of their required nutrients since I'm mostly home cooking for them. I do add 1/3 cup of Evo Red Bites and give them a multi vitamin just to make sure they're getting their daily needs met.

They do look great though. Great fur, good firm poops (they had been suffering from diarrhea before I started home cooking and that was WITH using very high quality dog foods), and great energy levels. I love the variety of meals (my doggies loved their salmon dinner), and the snack recipes. The snacks are much better than anything you can buy at the store (which is packed with food coloring and fake sprayed on bacon scent).

I like that there is a wide variety of recipes, from high fat to low carb to everything in between. You dog is bound to like (and I would bet, love) one or two!

With all the dogfood & tainted dog treat scares, I decided to start making my dogs their own treats. You never know what bad ingredients are going into your pets food. With this cookbook you know exactly what your pet is being fed! This is a really fun and easy cookbook. My dogs LOVE the peanutbutter flavored treats. It's also a great cookbook for dogs with allergies, like my lab. I can monitor what he's being fed and leave certain ingredients out, if need be. Their coats are shinier and they seem happier and healthier. Great book!

I am just starting out switching from commercial dog food to cooking for my dogs. One of them suffers from EPI. This book is very informative and easy to use. I like the vet notes that go with each recipe, and the fact that they give you guidelines for the amount of food to feed.A good variety of meals and treats...this exceeded my expectations!

This cookbook loses a point because some recipes call for canned fruits and I don't believe in anything that isn't fresh for my dogs. That being said, lots of great advice and comments on nutrition. Clear guidelines for serving portions makes it easy. I do prefer another cookbook called Barker's Grub and would recommend that before this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Puppy is going crazy over these recipes!, May 25, 2010
This review is from: The Healthy Dog Cookbook: 50 Nutritious & Delicious Recipes Your Dog Will Love (Spiral-bound)
I just bought this book yesterday and have made three meals from it, so far, for my 4-month-old English Bulldog. This morning, I made one of the egg recipes with sweet potato and she was literally jumping for joy as I was preparing the meal. She loved it so much, she kept going back to the empty bowl and licking the sides. The cookbook does call for a lot of expensive meats like lamb, duck, and salmon so I may just stick only to the chicken and turkey meals. However, I feel that it's all worth it if you don't want to spend thousands at the vet later on. I never thought I'd be this kind of dog owner, but it does feel good to know you're trying your best at keeping 'em healthy and happy.
