5.0 out of 5 stars The New Gold Standard in Disney Guides, November 8, 2008
By Jenna Hanson (Marco Island, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Healthy Guide to Walt Disney World 2009: How to Eat Right and Stay Fit in Disney - The NEW Diet, Dining, Food, Fitness and Complete Weight Loss Book (Paperback)
Witty, thorough, useful, honest, and best of all, accurate to a fault. I took my family to Disney World armed with this book and we were not disappointed once. This guide was written by authors who really know WDW and their local knowledge shows. In the book's introduction they say that it doesn't want to be just another general overview Disney guide. Every minute of that effort shows, as this book concisely concentrates on such specific topics as healthy Disney Dining, Fitness and Menu options.

I initially heard about this book through many of of the Diseay community forums which all seem to give a positive review. This book is well written with lots of healthy tips, especially for Guests that like to maintain their healthy habits while on vacation. I also look for the Eat Tips and Fit Tips boxes. These brief pieces of info and health trivia are always full of data and can be quite humorous. Along the way I found the book sprinkled with some hidden mickeys, great menu suggestions and the best dining plan strategies I ever heard of.

Easy to read, the book thankfully isn't loaded with cute Disney pictures and little substance. Rather, the Healthy Guide contains authoritative in-depth text based on experiences of someone who really knows Disney World. For the most part my experiences mirrored with the authors commentary. As an added bonus, I found that the book can be a great source of motivation to stay on the healthy road even after your vacation ends. There is a free program offered in the book that allows readers to keep a healthy lifestyle beyond their Disney vacation.

You often wonder if travel writers are paid off to say what they do about average foods and useless activities. These writers seem to tell it like it is. This simple, but effective layout conveys a ton of information quickly and easily.

The only negative is that you might never order a turkey leg again, after you see all the things you could eat instead and still not hit the calorie count of one leg!

Highly recommended book, even if you aren't trying to lose weight or don't think the words vacation and healthy go together. You'll learn a ton about the foods you are eating at restaurants, which is well worth the price of admission.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guidebook, November 8, 2008
By D. Smolarek (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Healthy Guide to Walt Disney World 2009: How to Eat Right and Stay Fit in Disney - The NEW Diet, Dining, Food, Fitness and Complete Weight Loss Book (Paperback)
Just returned from a week in Disney World and really enjoyed having this book as a guide to the resort. I also had several other books like the Unofficial Guide, etc, but in my opinion this book is the best of the bunch for 2009. Like most people nowadays, I tend to place a high priority on healthy eating and fitness so this book is a welcome addition for active Disney guests everywhere.

We have traveled to Disney World enough times to think that we knew the offerings well. This book reveals many hidden health secrets in WDW that even the seasoned visitor will find it of value.

Over the course of our visits to Disney we have had an opportunity to experience a large number of its eateries, use the Disney Dining plans and fitness activities (we partake in the Disney marathon and Endurance Series events every year). Author Dan Green's evaluation of the different healthy menu options and best fitness activities is fair and accurate. He gives precise, and often funny evaluation of restaurants and locations (my favorite is his review of the Epcot restaurants).

The only problem with The Healthy Guide to Disney, however, is its overexposure. It seemed as if almost every guest in the theme parks was holding a copy of the Healthy Guide book in their hands. Even the family sitting next to me on the plane had the book. My only regret is that the writers may have revealed too many of the places so it will be even harder for active Disney guests to get ADR's to all of the WDW eateries and activities suggested in the book.

A final positive thought. I love the fact that the book is updated periodically and reprinted throughout the entire year to address changes in the Disney landscape. We all know that Disney is constantly modifying its restaurant menus, activities and prices. It seems most Disney guidebooks eventually come under unwarranted criticism from the Disney community about factual content. These authors, to their credit, appear to go above and beyond with their publication to make sure Disney readers possess the most up to date factual content available.

If you want to eat healthier, stay fit and enjoy your time while in Disney World, make sure you add this book to your luggage.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Disney Guide, November 9, 2008
By Jon C. (Columbia, GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Healthy Guide to Walt Disney World 2009: How to Eat Right and Stay Fit in Disney - The NEW Diet, Dining, Food, Fitness and Complete Weight Loss Book (Paperback)
If you want to know the healthy parts to Disney, I don't think this book has any real competition from other books. My other Disney guides had some supplementary and detailed info on health, but it came nowhere close to this book in useful coverage of big and little healthful insights to eating and fitness in WDW.

The marathon and restaurant sections alone are worth the price of the book. We went to five restaurants with a healthful rating and everyone was outstanding.

The author tells you what you need to know to prepare for your healthy Disney vacation and has strong opinions on what to eat and do, including where to hike and bike and the best fitness centers. You're time in Disney is extremely valuable, because even if you're staying two weeks, you can only do so much. I bought my book in advance of the trip and I'm glad I did, because it takes a while to read and absorb the information. Of course you'll have to plan earlier than that for flight, places to stay, etc. The book is easy to read and entertaining and has some photos to backup their descriptions and put them in perspective.

I didn't agree with everything in the book but certainly most of it. The complaints I have about the book are actually very minor. It was extremely helpful in extracting the most out of my week in Disney. It's a must have. I will definitely be using my Healthy Guide on my next Disney trip in late 2009.
