Introduction: My Home or Office Unhealthy?

The teepee is much better to live in; always clean, warm in winter, cool in summer, easy to move. The white man builds big house, cost much money, like big cage, shut sun out, can never move; always sick... Indians and animals know better how to live... Nobody can be in good health if he does not have all the time fresh air, sunshine and good water...

- Chief Flying Hawk, Ogalala Sioux, nephew of Sitting Bull

We tend to think of our homes as safe havens, places that protect and nurture us. We may not like going to the office, but we typically do not think of the office as toxic. Unfortunately, the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that pollution indoors can be six to ten times higher than outside and is responsible for serious health effects. Because we spend 90% of our time indoors, we are potentially exposed to 90% of the factors that cause illness while we are indoors. The indoors is widely recognized as one of the most serious risks to human health.
You don't have to live in an unhealthy home or office. This book provides you with a roadmap to identifying the worst offenders and correcting them. In today's world it seems everything is thought to cause cancer or be bad for your health. But most homes and offices typically have only a few environmental factors that are responsible for the bulk of potential harm. This book contains a list of the Top Ten. It is based on the investigation of hundreds of homes, offices, and schools.

More About the Author

This all started for me because I got sick while working as a handyman...

I was an aerospace engineer for eleven years and I finally quit my job and moved to a small town where as fate would have it, I ended up working as a handyman. As a handyman I had more work than I knew what to do with until one day I started to get sick. I found myself sick and tired all the time and didn't know why. And this was not my normal state. In fact, people hired me because of my energy.

At first I blamed it on working too much. But then I found it was from the hazardous stuff I was being exposed to. Once I was aware of that, I began to realize there are a lot of people out there who are sick because of their homes. If was happening to me, it had to be happening to them.

So right then and there is when I made a decision. I would find ways of getting rid of the stuff that was making us sick. And through my research and going into thousands of people's homes, offices and schools, I found out what this stuff was. And that's how "Healthy Living Spaces" was born.

From that I developed a very simple list of what's really bad for your health, the Top 10 Hazards. In a world where everything seems bad for your health, I have found that ninety-percent of health problems can be eliminated by following this list. By following the chapter outlines and compelling stories in "Healthy Living Spaces: Top 10 Hazards" you will experience the tips & techniques and the strategies that will help you overcome the road blocks to a healthy home environment, through the eyes of those people that have been there.

As President of Healthy Living Spaces, I, Daniel Stih, now investigate homes and office buildings to solve health problems related to mold, complaints about poor indoor air quality, odors and building related illness throughout the country. I am a Certified Indoor Environmental Consultant (CIEC) and Certified Microbial Consultant (CMC), board-awarded by the American Council for Accredited Certification and the first to be accepted onto the National Green Panel at Construction Disputes Resolution Services, a program that helps mediate disputes between contractors and home owners related to air quality problems with green buildings. I have been interviewed on TV and radio talk-shows throughout the world.

Be well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Small but loaded with solid data and great tips, November 17, 2007

This review is from: Healthy Living Spaces: Top 10 Hazards Affecting Your Health (Paperback)
This book is short and to the point, informational, educational and packed full of well-researched and not so well-known facts about things in our homes that could be detrimental to our health. Every chapter is well-organized: how to detect or find the problem, how to fix it (most solutions are "do-it-yourself" ones) and resources are listed at the end of each chapter. This little book has substance and the author doesn't waste your time with a lot of babbling about stuff you already know. We're all aware that environmental toxins are bad for us. This book tells us how to find them and how to get rid of them ! It's a quick read (easily read in one sitting) and yet covers the major topics like mold, dust, gas, wiring errors (that can cause elevated exposure to electromagnetic fields), remodeling, new house smell, ductwork, crawlspaces, ceiling cavities and more. As another reviewer pointed out, editing of this book was weak but the valuable information herein more than makes up for the annoyance of poor grammar or a few mispelled words.

5.0 out of 5 stars I learned a lot., February 9, 2009
This review is from: Healthy Living Spaces: Top 10 Hazards Affecting Your Health (Paperback)
I recommend this book. I am an Indoor Environmental Professional. I was surprised at how much I learned from this book. I am going to include it in the suggested reading section of every report I write for home and building owners. Americans are concerned about excercise and what we eat, yet we spend 90% of our time indoors and do not think much about indoor air quality. Thanks Mr. Stih for your consideration for those of us who breathe.
