About the Author

Sue Kuivanen is a credentialed secondary English teacher, who has taught children and adults of all ages. Currently she is owner of Joy and Happiness Events, an event planning company that specializes in creating and promoting health and wellness expos. Her strong interest in the needs of children and the environment took root during her grammar school years, and she began her teaching work with Special Olympic kids throughout her high school years. College life also opened her to what were then more alternative lifestyles like yoga, vegetarianism, and various healing arts. While in college, she developed a strong desire to write a book but could never think of a compelling enough topic to undertake the commitment. After becoming a mother, Sue received the inspiration she needed to write about subjects that had been playing a predominant role in her life: health, children and the planet. During the young years of the Internet, Sue began working as a business and IT consultant, which involved numerous gap analysis projects. More out of habit than planning, Sue approached the issue of feeding kids well by looking at the gap of what the many experts were expounding and the vastly different reality of what feeding children looks like today. Through storytelling, extensive research and field work, she provides a source of wisdom for guardians of children who would like to make conscious decisions to create happy and healthy lifestyles for their families and communities. Sue lives in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California with her husband, Michael, daughter Savanah, and Australian Labradoodle, Tulip. Author Sue Kuivanen's analysis of how we feed our children and how we can do better was profoundly inspiring.

I just loved this book.

For a long time I will admit that I ate a less-than-stellar diet and I was hesitant to read a book about the topic, for I felt awful for not feeding my girls the healthiest foods they deserve all the time. I didn't want to feel even guiltier than I already had been feeling about feeding our family. In spite of that, I delved into this book and I found it really fascinating on many levels. I learned so much.

Kuivanen touched on such a wide array of relevant subjects. I especially appreciated that she did not present a "Do it my way or take the highway" approach. She gave realistic options in terms of making changes in how we shop and feed our kids, among a multitude of other fascinating topics discussed in the book. Moreover, I was moved by how the author shared her insecurities about how she had fed her daughter over the years. I was impressed to learn about her many challenges with bettering her local school system's nutrition programs. The down-to-earth writing style was refreshing.

I encourage all our parents/caregivers etc. to read this book

The author's perseverance in advocating for her local school district's lunch program is at the heart of this interesting, well-researched book. Kuivanen describes her grass-roots efforts at improving the school lunch program, achieving some initial success despite overwhelming obstacles. Sadly, the changes didn't last. As Kuivanen shows repeatedly, raising healthy kids in our junk food society requires creativity and constant vigilance. Although I disagree with the author's low-fat, vegetarian recommendations, Healthy Kids is an entertaining and informative read, full of practical suggestions for improving childhood nutrition at home and in the schools.

This book details the author's experience with raising her child and trying to be as healthy as she can. I really appreciate this book because it is very helpful for any parent who cares at all about their child's nutrition. You don't have to be a super organic vegan to appreciate this book - but if you are, I think the author still has something to teach you! I know I picked up many tips. This book is full of her personal stories, both successes and struggles. The book is well-written, with an easy to read style. I think any parent can relate to the issues she describes, which range from friends' diets to the food at school to grocery stores and beyond. The author has practical tips for dealing with challenges such as holidays like Halloween, and picky eaters. This book is a great read for anybody who is raising children or working with them!

Format: Paperback
The remarkable thing about this book is Sue's ability to capture all the elements of parenting, from the scope of healthy eating and digestion. Parents are involved in a head-spinning amount of daily activities: school functions, the holidays, the weekends, play dates, scary dentists visits, moments of instilling discipline (or sticking to your guns!), discussions on how to feed your kid well, the hours of shopping at the right place for the right price for the right kind of food--it can be overwhelming for new parents who did not anticipate all the nuances that would go into caring for a child! Among the provocative chapters, such as Sue's involvement with her daughter's school district to promote healthier eating, Sue has a chapter solely about teeth. She sheds light on research done decades ago linking a healthy diet to healthy teeth.

In the Teeth chapter, she illustrates in vivid detail the struggles of preserving and shaping healthy teeth for her daughter. Even as a health conscious and earth conscious parent, Sue cannot protect her child from the devastating dental caries developing on her child's teeth--and turns to in-depth the research, as well as old, learned gurus, for answers. This chapter exemplifies how a parent can tackle dental issues and take preventative care by feeding their kid the right kind of foods to promote tooth strength, including raw food diets that encourage children to chew, which eventually encourages stronger teeth.

Sue is a great author--not just because of the accessibility of her subject matter, but her empathy with ALL parental situations, and her clear, succinct writing. It is also obvious that Sue is watching for the details that can make things even just a little better--growing your own garden, getting a little sunlight.

Sue's book is a testament to what can be done if people are willing to work together. That being said, we ALL need to make a bigger effort to feed our children healthful food without additives, preservative and artificial colors and flavors.
