Book Description

April 2000 Illuminationbooks
So many people hear without listening--especially to sermons. In this book Walter Burghardt, one of the country's best preachers, moves to "the other side of the rail" and explains how to listen to the Word. Listening is a risk, an act of love, an act of being truly present and truly human.

Burghardt begins by explaining the "Just Word"--God's plan for salvation taking place within a specific community. He then connects the Word to today's headlines to show how sermons are or can be immediately relevant. Finally, he offers a 4-step model that helps audiences listen more deeply to what Jesus is saying, to what the Church is saying, to what the world is saying--and then respond to what they hear. These are transcendental principles because they underlie all our categories and are ways in which we transcend ourselves.

Written for a wide ecumenical audience, this book provides concrete help for both the people "in the pew" and the preacher who's trying to reach them. It's insightful reading for all Christian laity and all preachers and homilists. It's also very useful for clergy and religious, teachers of homiletics, pastoral ministers, seminarians, and anyone involved or interested in social justice.

In Hear The Just Word & Live It, Walter Burghardt explains how to listen to the Word, and that listening is a risk, an act of love, an act of being truly resent and truly human. Written for a wide ecumenical audience, Hear The Just Word & Live It provides concrete, highly recommended, "reader friendly" help for both lay readers and the pastors who are trying to reach them with the Christian gospel.

3.0 out of 5 stars Homilies are meant to be heard, February 8, 2008

This review is from: Hear the Just Word & Live It (Illuminationbooks) (Paperback)
Father Burghardt composes excellent homilies, and although I'm not a homilist, just a "Hearer of the Just Word", I would suspect that they would be very useful for instruction for homilists.

For those of us who "listen" though, the homilies are only moderately useful as reflections on the Word. I got a very strong sense, as I was reading some of the homilies, of how important it is to "hear" the homily as well as read it.
