5.0 out of 5 stars A little prevention now will pay off later, September 27, 2010
This review is from: Hearos Earplugs High Fidelity Series for Comfortable Long Term Use with Free Case, 1 Package (Health and Beauty)
It is hard to get excited about ear plugs. Hearing protection is the last thing on most of our minds when we go see bands or use loud machinery around the house.

I found these ear plugs one day while I was searching for something to help better protect my hearing. The need for "Musician" type earplugs came to me when my grandparents who are in their 80's were complaining about how much decent hearing aid's cost them. They paid over 5k for each of them and that was for a middle of the road model. The batteries for them extended the cost even more. I do not want to be in their situation when I am their age so I decided to protect my hearing. They never played in a band as I do, so I figure that if I keep going on my path, I will probably be worse off than they are.

I play in a rock band and wanted to find some ear protection that still let me hear the full spectrum of high and low frequencies. I used traditional ear plugs in years past but always took them out because they cut out the high end which affected my playing. I was aware of the custom ear protection devices that a doctor will make with an actual mold of your ear. I know those really work well but I was not about to shell out $300 for that. Not that I couldn't pay $300 for protecting my ears, I just would rather try these Hearos filters for less than $20 first and see how it went.

I tried them with my band and let me tell you, wow what a difference. The Hearos are not ear plugs in the traditional sense. They are more like sound attenuators. They let you hear the same highs and lows but they simply lower the volume for you. It was amazing how much they quieted things down. The first night I wore them at band practice I was taking them in and out just to hear the difference. What I found was that I was able to hear more details of the band with them in. I am not an Audiologist but I understand pretty well from a medical perspective how the ear works. I think what was happening is that my band was so loud in the past that it was distorting in my head where I could not make out all the details. The cymbals from our drummer sounded crisp and full, the tambourine sounded alive with the Hearos in. All the band sounds were all of a sudden equal, just like a perfect mix on a record.

I left the next couple practices after wearing the Hearos filters with no ringing at all in my ears. I usually would get in my car and once the door closed I would hear ringing and the radio would be muffled. Not anymore! I also found that I was less tired after band practice. It may sound strange but the reduced volume of the band made me feel better after practice. You have to try it to know what I mean. It is such a nice feeling to leave practice or a live show and not hear the ringing.

I have since turned 2 of my band members onto this product. They love them. The comment I always hear is that they wish they found them earlier. The only thing I would advise band members to watch out for when they wear the Hearos is to watch their volumes. At first I tended to turn up my guitar amp a little louder than normal and I was overpowering the band. The sound reduction was so good I didn't realize how loud I was. None of my band member who were wearing the Hearos complained though! I would suggest that you take them out briefly from time to time just to make sure you are blending well with the rest of the band.

I also use the Hearos around the house for using power tools or vaccumming. My saws can get loud using them all day.

The Hearos are so small that no one has ever noticed that I have them in when I perform live except my bandmates that are close in proximity.

As I said earlier it is hard to get excited about earplugs but I feel that a little prevention now will help you as you get older. You won't regret trying these Hearos out. If they don't work for you, you aren't out a lot of money anyway so it is worth a shot.

I may one day try the custom ear molds but I highly doubt they would be that much better than the Hearos filters for a lot less money. I could use that $300 to buy more guitar gadgets. Yeah, that's it!

Try they, you will thank me later.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST AND CHEAPEST IN EXISTENCE!, March 15, 2010

This review is from: Hearos Earplugs High Fidelity Series for Comfortable Long Term Use with Free Case, 1 Package (Health and Beauty)
I've tried several different types and brands of ear plugs to block out concert noise. These ear plugs are the best in several different areas.
1. INVISIBLE: when these are in your ear no one at the concert will notice. the clear tip is completely hidden!
2. BLOCKS OUT NOISE: these don't just muffle the noise they block the highs and the lows, sounds just like someone turned the volume down!
3. EXTREMELY COMFORTABLE: I can't wear ipod earphones longer than 30 minutes before they start hurting, but I can wear these ear plugs for hours on end without even noticing!
4. CHEAP! You cannot find a better price for high quality ear plugs!

These were recommended to me from an industry expert and I whole heartedly agree! Amazing product, I bought a pair for my friend!

PS: make sure your ear is clean before you use these, excess ear wax is gross.

4.0 out of 5 stars NRR 12 -- ONLY! NOT NRR20!, November 24, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hearos Earplugs High Fidelity Series for Comfortable Long Term Use with Free Case, 1 Package (Health and Beauty)
I own one pair of these which states CLEARLY ON THE BACK OF THE PACKAGING-- Noise Reduction Rate 12 db. The technical details on amazon are WRONG. This is not an NRR20 rated product -- Hearos doesn't make that claim! If you want high NRR TRY THESE INSTEAD: Hearos High Fidelity Ear Plugs -- they ARE NRR20 rated, I also own a pair of them. However, this product, the "Long Term Use" version, reviewed here, IS more COMFORTABLE... but not as effective at reducing the noise. A major disappointment for me coming from the more effective plugs-- that's why I give it 4/5 stars (NOT because they are falsely spec'd on the amazon page). For some this may be just the right amount of noise reduction. But in my experience with both earplugs, you'll have to find the correct distance, depending on which set you go with, from the amps/speakers/stage to optimize listening AND safety. I wrote this review because no-one had mentioned that these are actually LESS EFFECTIVE at blocking out the noise, but quite a bit more comfortable than the other "Hi Fi" plugs. I can't yet speak to the Etymotic Research ER20 High-Fidelity Earplugs (White with Clear Stem) (equivalent to the NRR20 Hi Fi's), but I plan on purchasing them next. I bought another pair of these for my friend that is choosing comfort over protection-- so I took a picture of the back packaging and submitted it here for all to see! Amazon sometimes has a "submit technical details" button, but I can't seem to find it on this page... sorry, hope you read this first (assuming you care), or look at my image. Already submitted the tag.
