3.0 out of 5 stars Mitchum as Randolph Hearst and Virginia Madsen as the woman who stole his heart, May 7, 2008
This review is from: The Hearst and Davies Affair: America's Royal Scandal [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Robert Mitchum stars in this real life story of William Randolph Hearst the infamous publishing tycoon. This made for TV period piece scans decades following the scandalous relationship between Hearst and a gorgeous but unknown "Ziegfeld Follies" showgirl Marion Davies as played by Virginia Madsen (sideways). Their strange romance became a scandal that would last 35years.

The film appeared on ABC TV in 1985. Virgina Madsen is perfect as the shy young girl looking to make her way in Hollywood. She soon gets Hollywood handed to her on a platter. It is as much about her life as it is a Bio pic on Hearst. Mitchum walks through his role hear. Not much more could be expected considering his age and the not too deep dialogue it is not surprising that he would not lend too much to this often misunderstood character. From the roaring twenties to the 1950's the film does a great job of set design and costuming. Definitely worth checking out. - sideshowvideo
