Awesome story! True Thoene writing!, October 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Heart of Allegiance: A Novel (Portraits of Destiny Series) (Paperback)
Reading this book it was easy to tell that the authors grew up in a house full of great writers! True to their family name, Jake and Luke Thoene have written a novel packed with excitement and emotion. The novel opens with a terrible storm at sea and a ship wreck which separates two baby brothers. One ends up in France and the other in England during the days of Napoleon's wars. I'm not going to tell the whole plot but you can guess how terrific it plays. I will mention the naval battles are awesome and the love interests are real and engaging. I can't wait to read book two on the Portraits of Destiny series!!!

extremely exciting historical novel, August 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Heart of Allegiance: A Novel (Portraits of Destiny Series) (Paperback)
Heart of Allegiance is one of the best historical novels I've read since the last Patrick O'brien novel! Awesome plot and fascinating characters kept me turning pages on a long flight from New York to the West coast. Even jet lag couldn't make me put this story down until I finished at four in the morning. The cover of the novel should carry a warning label that the contents can cause sleeplessness. Bravo to the authors. I'm telling everyone and can't wait until the next volume in the series!Write lots more and lots faster please!

Disappointing!, July 25, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Heart of Allegiance: A Novel (Portraits of Destiny Series) (Paperback)
This is a book with an interesting story line, but the characters are not well developed and the narrative drags. The historical setting is interesting, though. I just couldn't finish this book. I ended up skimming to the end and discovered a weak ending. Oh, well.

fascinating in both history and characters, August 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Heart of Allegiance: A Novel (Portraits of Destiny Series) (Paperback)
Heart of Allegiance is a great read! Taking a little known and largely unexplored era, this pair of brother authors have crafted a gem. I can hardly wait for the next book in the series so I can continue following the fortunes of Albert and William. Query for the authors: are the characters based on real brothers?

I thouroughly enjoyed this book. it was fantastically written, received rave reviews from friends and colleagues and i would have to agree with those who reccomended it to me. it has a very mature story line with lifelike characters. it was easy to relate to and follow and i am anxiously awaiting the next in the series. the thoenes made an excellent move in shifting genres! their readership will really benefit from their experience and knowledge in historical fiction. i hope they keep it up for many books to come!!!! i'm even recomending the book to students in my history classees!!
