5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Jane in Milwaukee TOP 500 REVIEWER on June 2, 2013
See the Images I uploaded above of the front and back covers. These projects are included here along with color plates of many others and hundreds of patterns.

Ann Strite-Kurz studied under Ilse Altherr, one of the giants of embroidery, and is a certified teacher with the Embroiderers' Guild of America. Like her friend Jane Zimmerman, she has self-published this book. If you can ever lay your hands on it, snap it up.

I like to really get to the nitty gritty of making my stitches perfect and this book is particularly helpful. I've never seen such good instructions and diagrams showing the difference between these 2 sometimes undistinguishable stitches: the outline stitch and the stem stitch. Using a diagram showing that the stitching goes from left to right in an "up at A, down at B" pattern, you would never know there is a tiny difference if you hold the thread to the right or to the left of the needle as it is drawn from the fabric. She has broken down the elements of blackwork to aspects of the stitching, the route, the look of the stitches and its use as stitching a background, border, around a shape or over a gauze foundation.

Just the 8 tips on page 153 of how to choose stitches and colors to design my own pattern is invaluable.

I own the majority of books in the bibliography which is broken down into blackwork, pattern, sources to adapt blackwork patterns and canvas work. I, too, recommend:
