Book Description

October 1, 1992

Written by experts in pediatric cardiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the University of Rochester Medical Center, The Heart of a Child describes the latest developments in understanding and treating heart problems in children. Through case examples, question-and-answer sections, detailed drawings, and careful explanations, the authors explain the causes of heart disorders, how they are discovered and diagnosed, how they affect the child, and how they are treated.

"The table of contents itself runs over six pages and covers most of the topics one would expect in a relatively comprehensive textbook for pediatricians. Indeed, the degree of information contained within the text is such that I would be happy if my registrar knew only half of it. -- Journal of Pediatric Child Health

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Neill and Edward Clark, professors in pediatric cardiology, along with pediatric nurse Carleen Clark, have written a reasonably detailed book for parents on heart defects and diseases in children. They outline how the heart develops in a child and show what can go wrong during the growing process. They also discuss the risk factors for heart defects, explain how heart problems are recognized, and cover treatment options. While the severity of heart problems in children is not minimized, the authors emphasize that most conditions are now treatable. Parents are reassured that none of their actions would probably have caused or prevented their child's condition. Transplantation and accompanying medical conditions with heart defects are given brief attention. Recommended for family health collections.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, but the information seems outdated., December 17, 1998

This review is from: The Heart of a Child: What Families Need to Know about Heart Disorders in Children (Hardcover)
This book was very informative, but we have found that the newer publication released in 1998 was more up to date. "Heart Defects in Children - What Every Parent Should Know" was written by a nurse, and has easier to understand explainations of the defects. It also has a draw in heart section where you can more easily visualize your child's defect. Check it out.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must for parents of children with CHD, February 24, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Heart of a Child: What Families Need to Know about Heart Disorders in Children (Hardcover)
My husband and I found this very useful when our child was first diagnosed, I was always referring to the list of terms and the pictures.

My only regret is that of another review in that the statistical information is out of date.

5.0 out of 5 stars Congenital Heart Defects, December 18, 1999
This review is from: The Heart of a Child: What Families Need to Know about Heart Disorders in Children (Hardcover)
As parents of two children with congenital heart defects, we found this book to be a wonderful resource. It is a must buy for parents who find themselves faced with the prospect of raising a child with a heart condition. This book does a wonderful job of describing the types of heart defects in terms the average person can understand.
