"The Heart of Christmas" begins on Halloween, when a mother is taking her child trick-or-treating only to wander into a Christmas setting. She is told to read a blog and does so. What she finds is Dax's story. For the most part, this movie is not a Christmas movie, though. It is the story of a couple facing quite possibly the worst tragedy they could, the terminal illness that eventually will claim their son. Throughout the film, they spend most of their time at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, where Dax undergoes treatment after treatment. But St. Jude is wonderfully supportive, especially in that Dax's parents, Austin and Julie (performed solidly by Eric Jay Beck and Jeanne Nelson), are around others who know what they are going through and who can therefore offer the combination of support, empathy, and understanding that probably isn't readily available in too many places. Ultimately, however, the couple must face the possibility that Dax will not live to see Christmas.
This film has every chance to be maudlin, and I expect some will indeed find it so. I didn't, though. The script, the cast, and the direction seemed thoroughly heartfelt to me. I suspect that there were some unpleasant moments in the real story that did not make it to the film; Julie and Austin come across as almost perfect, but, as I don't know the real Julie and Austin and as the film does seem sincere, I'm prepared to acknowledge that what we see is an accurate reflection of their good qualities.
I noted earlier two points. The first is that this film is "sort of" Dax's story. There are clear differences between the truth and the script.Read more ›
I thought the actors did a wonderful job with the medical jargin. Although there are quite a few mistakes, like in the movie they say Dax wasn't sick until he was 3 years old in real life he was 13 months old when he fell ill. In one scene the little girl is wearing a bright pink sleeveless jacket. When the camera angle changes she's not wearing it. Then when it changes again she's magically wearing it again. Still the movie is amazing and it's truly touched my heart.
I love that 5% of the profits from this dvd go to St. Judes but in my opinion it should be alot more.
Also Amazon is charging $25 for this movie. Go to walmart. I purchased this for $9.96 there just a few days ago
During my tenure with Dr. Martin, I decided I wanted to be a pediatrician and work at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. Because I was so well taken care of, I wanted to return the favor to children in need, great need. St. Jude seemed like the place for me.
My desire to enter medicine didn't pan out as planned. Instead, I pursued and obtained a nursing degree. And even though I never worked at St. Jude as I wished, My husband and I have monetarily supported them over the years. We believe in their cause, their call.
With my background in tow, being the mother of a son and LOVING the Christmas season, The Heart of Christmas grabbed me from the onset.
The Heart of Christmas chronicles the short life of Dax Locke. Not only do we see and hear the journey he and his parents traveled (after he was diagnosed with leukemia), but we're also privy to how his story impacts Megan Walsh (Candace Cameron Bure, Full House) and her family.
After a chance encounter and prompting, Megan begins reading Julie Locke's (Jeanne Neilson, Free Willy: Escape from Pirate's Cove) online journal.Read more ›
