Awesome comedy/drama from the end of the 80s
on April 2, 2014
I recently bought this DVD to replace my old VHS copy, and I hadn't watched it in quite a few years. It was an absolute joy to see it again, and finally in a quality that approaches the real experience (in the theater)... you know what I mean if the only way you've viewed a movie you like has been on VHS in 4:3 - the sound and picture suffer greatly so seeing it on DVD is like watching it for the first time again... you see and hear things that just aren't there on VHS.
Anyway, it's also interesting to re-watch something you liked in your youth, and see how different it looks in your middle age. Well, in some ways it did because Heart Condition is full of 80s touches, so that had a more distinctly nostaligic look to watch now. But the story and the acting held up well anyway, if anything I appreciated the movie more. The style of the clothing, the crazy apartment that Denzel's character lives in, the neat Malibu beach house of the pimp bad guy... I even like the soundtrack.
I don't want to tell you the plot again but suffice to say it is hilarious to watch Bob Hoskins transform from a gruff, smoking and drinking, cheeseburger gorging, bitter old cop - there's a shopping and grooming montage that reminds me of a combination of the clothing trip in Twins and the haircutting trip in Hardbodies. And the variations in the acting were very interesting too - you get loud moments of extreme confrontation, you get quiet moments of sad realizations that there's a better way to live if you change your attitude, not merely about being racist (that's almost the least of Bob Hoskins' character's problems) but about how you relate to everyone in general. I still thought amid all that, there were plenty of hilarious gags too.
