Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The compelling terrain of the Australian outback, the setting of this grandly proportioned novel, draws two women--Alix Macfarlane and, later, her daughter Caro--to their fates. First met in the early part of this century, Alix is the daughter of wealthy landowners in Adelaide, chafing at her parents' expectations that she will marry and settle into their well-bred society. Against their wishes, idealistic Alix pursues a nursing degree and then works in an outback clinic where she finds the primitive conditions and the desert land harsh but fulfilling. After marriage to a farmer, Alix moves deeper into "the red heart of Australia, belonging as the Aborigines belonged to a dream-time thousands of years old." Widowed during WW I, Alix begins a career with the airborne medical services; it is Caro, however, a pilot as well as nurse in WW II, who will bring Alix's aspirations to fruition. As in her All the Rivers Run , Cato conveys the haunting allure of a beautiful but unforgiving land, within the context of a captivating story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written book about life in Austrailia, June 23, 2000
By A Customer
This is the second book by Nancy Cato that I have read. I searched down "All the Rivers Run" about 15 years ago after watching a mini-series on TV, but didn't realize Cato had written so many other books until now. Her writing is beautiful, and captures the harshness and beauty of the the Austrailian continent. This book is about a nurse who takes a position in the outback just prior to WWI, and ends up marrying a rancher, moving to his ranch in the middle of the Queensland desert. She falls in love with the life and the country, at the same time realizing that the elements are unforgiving in this desolate part of the world. Reminds me of another wonderful book about this time era by Beverly Hughesdon, "Song of Songs", which takes place in England. It's too bad more people don't catch on to these wonderful books, which are often classed as romances, but I feel have more substance than the average romance. I would compare these sweeping historical books with "Gone With the Wind" any day.
