Book Description

Dark allegory describes the narrator's journey up the Congo River and his meeting with, and fascination by, Mr. Kurtz, a mysterious personage who dominates the unruly inhabitants of the region. Masterly blend of adventure, character development, psychological penetration. Considered by many Conrad's finest, most enigmatic story.

good book. I find that I am reading older books a lot. Newer books are becoming silly to me. Their are good authors out their,but hard to find with all the mediocrity around.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful writing October 21, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
". . . No, it is impossible; it is impossible to convey the life-sensation of any given epoch of one's existence,-- that which makes its truth, its meaning-- its subtle and penetrating essence. It is impossible. We live, as we dream--alone. . . ."

PROs:

* Amazing writing

* Deep and influential

CONs:

* Very slow at some points

I can see why this book is considered a classic and immortalized Joseph Conrad; the writing is some of the best I've ever come across. I would most likely have been too bored to finish this book if it was written by most other authors, but Conrad's writing kept me engaged. The book can be very slow, especially towards the middle, but it has a very climactic ending. You can definitely see this book's influence on modern entertainment items such as Apocalypse Now and Spec Ops: The Line.

"Marlow ceased, and sat apart, indistinct and silent, in the pose of a meditating Buddha. Nobody moved for a time. "We have lost the first of the ebb," said the Director, suddenly. I raised my head. The offing was barred by a black bank of clouds, and the tranquil waterway leading to the uttermost ends of the earth flowed somber under an overcast sky-- seemed to lead into the heart of an immense darkness."

I really liked the book at first it was very confusing but by the middle or close to the middle of it I was hooked! It was a great read but I only recommend it to people who can comprehend such a vivid text!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Imagery is stunning August 5, 2013

The imagery in this novel is simply stunning. The mis-understanding of cultures and clash of colonialism with native tribes is illuminated in detail. It is a quick and engaging read.

2.0 out of 5 stars It's a turtle of a book December 20, 2013

Slow, slow, slow. The topic is interesting, but it took Conrad 100 words for every 1 needed. I simply didn't have the patience. I even tried WhisperSync, thinking I'd enjoy it as I fell asleep. Unfortunately the audio narrator spoke so quickly, I missed half of what he was reading. I tried in daylight to read it again. Gave up.
