Editorial Reviews

Review

"The brilliant mind behind Moby Dick in Pictures is back to illustrate Joseph Conrad’s classic."
—Flavorwire

"Darkness never looked so good: Matt Kish's illustrated edition of Joseph Conrad's classic follows the template he created with Moby-Dick In Pictures ."
The National Post

"For your friend who slept through English class, an illustrated version of a classic: Heart of Darkness, written by Joseph Conrad and illustrated by Matt Kish."
— The Airship (picked Matt Kish's Heart of Darkness as one of the best books of 2013!)

"Two years after his infinitely wonderful illustrations for every page of Moby-Dick, which ranked among the best art and design books of 2011, self-taught Ohio-based artist Matt Kish returns with an equally exquisite edition of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness (public library). With one haunting acrylic-paint-and-ink illustration for every page, Kish — whose artwork was included in the excellent compendium The Graphic Canon, Vol. 3reinvigorates the Conrad classic and its timeless themes of race, gender, power, privilege, and the dualities of the human soul."

About the Author

Joseph Conrad is widely accepted to be one of the greatest writers in the English language. Along with Heart of Darkness, he's the author of Lord Jim, Nostromo, and numerous other novels, stories, and essays.

Matt Kish is a self-taught artist from Ohio, where he lives with his wife, their two frogs, and far too many books. He has created one illustration for every page of Moby-Dick, fully illustrated Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, and had his work appear in The Chicagoan, Propeller Magazine, and the Salt Hill Journal. He has also illustrated The Alligators of Abraham by Robert Kloss and the upcoming The Desert Places by Robert Kloss and Amber Sparks.

This is an art book -- we all have the Conrad book already on our shelves, so the reason to buy this one is for the illustrations. They're remarkable and evocative, an emotional ride into the Heart of Darkness.

This book is a masterpiece (Joseph Conrad's), and is something I will return to again repeatedly. This version is going to add a deeper terror to some sections and just give it new life in a new light. I can't wait to finish it to pick it up years down the road.

The Heart of Darkness is a masterpiece of English literature - evocative of both a specific time during Colonial Africa as well as a more timeless glimpse of humanity's shadow. The story builds in a steady relentless way, which creates a vivid sense of claustrophobia and madness. Rereading it again in this edition has been especially powerful.

At first I thought Matt Kish's illustrations were maybe interesting in a cute and quirky way, but also as irrelevant and mildly irritating within the reading experience. But then as the story built and sucked me in further and further I came to see the drawings (one to each left-side page) as beautifully (if terrifyingly) complimentary and enhancing to the literary experience. The style of the illustrations is definitely distinctive and creative - even bizarre - earthy and abstract without attempting to be too literal. It would be great if this approach (pictures+words) helps attract a whole new generation of readers to Conrad. He really is one of the best.

Matt Kish's illustrations beautifully complement Conrad's text, providing a disturbing and modern sensibility to the work. I was familiar with Kish's version of Moby Dick and this new volume did not disappoint. Very interesting to hear Kish's commentary on how he approached this work. Highly recommended!
