2.0 out of 5 stars A little scary for the younger crowd
I would have to agree with the other reviewer. It is not a game for kids under 10... I purchased it for my 7-8 yr olds and they freaked out as the first scene played out. The controls have to be tight, and whatever you do don't make a mistake. After trying it out myself, I kind of felt like throwing the controller down. One misstep and I had to start over. Oh...

This was a very cute game. It's not what i had expected but was still an excellent pick. I was looking for a role playing game which this is not. Its an adventure game in which the boy travels through very scary scenes killing shadow monsters. It has very good comic type graphics and is not too scary so that younger players can enjoy it. It does take some thought and trial and error to get through some areas so i don't recommend it for those younger than ten or so.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, Fun game!, October 21, 2002
This review is from: Heart of Darkness (Video Game)
Heart of Darkness has great cut scenes and good graphics overall. Addictive, challenging game play (be sure to save) with an appealing story line. My eight year old loves it too and plays for hours. The puzzles are not too hard but for me required some work. Personally, one of the better games I've played.

5.0 out of 5 stars Satisfaction level is high if you can do it., January 25, 2006
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Heart of Darkness (Video Game)
This game can try your patience. If you are good at playing older Mario games, then you will have more than half a chance to beat this game. I found it very hard to say the least. In some levels especially toward the end, I would try a level for a couple of hours and when I would advance, I would quit, and try some weeks later when I mentally wasn't spent. I could not forget about it; every time I beat a level I would think "maybe I could do the next one." I could not beat the boss at the end and had to be satisfied with that. Almost at the end of the game, I found a cheat, it is the first time I have used cheating and it helped me mentally to keep trying, and to see the ending. I wouldn't use this until you really, really need it, because it would ruin the satisfaction level for you. To see ALL Cinemas and Levels * with the game off hold L1 + L2 + R1 + R2 *on controller 2 * (you must be in the second controller slot) Keep holding those buttons and access the options screen, then the tree house, then load game. You can save and keep your progress after using this.
For all the frustration, I had, I still can say I had a great time playing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly addictive, highly entertaining, doesn't get better!!, April 7, 2002

...I got to try it out at my friend's house and we were ALL entertained.
The animation is excellent (I'm in school to be one, I know these things), the storyline great, and the action nonstop. My friends love to watch me play, and we pretty much react as if we're watching a movie. ("No! Don't go there! AAAAGHHH!")
The game says it's rated "Everyone", but I'd keep it away from kiddies younger than 10 or so. While you have infinate lives and no health meter, the deaths are pretty gruesome, even without blood (demons snapping kid's back, other demons kill and actually start EATING the kid are among the many demises).
This game will keep you entertained for hours. I'm glad I found the game cheap, but this game is WORTH the full price, unlike many other games currently being sold.

I personally have never been a big fan of side scrolling puzzle games. I tried Oddworld a couple of times and just wasn't able to get into it. Heart of Darkness however, was to my surprise a very well put together game. I enjoyed the plot even though it did seem meant for a younger age group, and the graphics are pretty good. You can definitely tell that 5 years was put into this game. Even if you're not a big fan of puzzle games (like me) I think you might just enjoy this game. The puzzles are not too difficult and the story lets you get involved.

It took years for this game to be pushed down my list of all time favorite games. If your looking for a hard game, a brain game, an action game, a science fiction game, a fun game, but not a frusterating game, then you have to buy this one. I beat it in a couple of days, but to this day (years later) I can still remember it and still feel the want of playing it again. I envy those playing this game for the first time. It is a trully unique game that combines the best of "Earthworm Jim", "The Oddworld Series" and even "Lost Vikings" into a wonderful imaginative game.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as METAL GEAR, June 5, 2004
This review is from: Heart of Darkness (Video Game)
This game is perfect for 8 to 15 year olds in my opinion. This is like METAL GEAR because of the story, cutcenes and memorable characters.
This game won't be hard for people who are very good at action games because I completed it in 5 to 7 days(I was 11 in 2001).

Why haven't they made a sequal?

5.0 out of 5 stars Get immersed in the world the designers created!, November 28, 2000
By
"legeek" (Dunwoody, GA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Heart of Darkness (Video Game)
The designers of Out of this World and Flashback, two of my favorite games back when I still actively used my Amiga computer, created Heart of Darkness. Sporting similar gameplay - and in the case of Out of this World, a similar short game length - fans of either of the previous games mentioned above should be right at home.

The computer graphic cut scenes are the best for the Playstation yet, in terms of image quality and in actual animation. While the cut scenes in Final Fantasy 7 and Tekken 3 are very good, pay attention to the lighting and the range of movement of the characters in Heart of Darkness. The style is a cross between classic Warner Bros and Jim Henson's the Dark Crystal, and I feel it surpasses even the first Toy Story. Getting back to the game, I have been waiting for a game with the animation quality of Dragon's Lair to have somewhat complicated game mechanics. Older games such as Earthworm Jim and Rayman began to approach this goal, and I feel Heart of Darkness is the closest yet. In terms of gameplay, be prepared for trial and error as you progress from screen to screen.

This may frustrate some, but it is rarely repetitive and I feel it is worth it to get immersed in both the story and the world the designers created.
