2.0 out of 5 stars Video conversion problem on DVD
As far as the performance goes, I much prefer either the Heart Alive in Seattle or Soundstage performance. The audio quality is better on those also. As for the video quality on this, what your picture looks like apparently will depend on your DVD player. There is a flaw in the frame conversion to video, as noted elsewhere here. It appears as minute, but very noticeable,...

5.0 out of 5 stars Sing Child, November 23, 2007
This review is from: Heart: Dreamboat Annie Live (DVD)
Heart's debut album is still my favorite of all their recordings, and this concert of the album being performed in it's entirety is pure magic from start to finish. Dreamboat Annie was always their most psychedelic and their most organic feeling album. Now Heart bring these wonderful, poetic songs to life again and also showcase how far they've came as musicians by enhancing on their own brand of rock they first created 30 years ago, especialy on "Sing Child," which one might call this concert's highlight as the violin section they included gives this updated live version a Dave Matthews Band kind of groove and leading into Ann Wilson's amazing flute solo very reminiscent of Jethro Tull. One might also call the highlight of this show taking place during the encore instead, in which Heart pay tribute to Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and The Who, and they play these cover versions of their influences with such craft and passion that they make these classic tunes feel like their own. You don't even necessarily have to be a big Heart fan to enjoy this show. Quite simply, if you're a lover of classic rock in general, then you will love this concert.

4.0 out of 5 stars Video document of 2007 live LP performance, October 23, 2007
By
This review is from: Heart: Dreamboat Annie Live (DVD)
Heart's April 2007 stage performance of their 1976 debut LP has been issued as both a CD and this DVD. Please check the CD listing (Dreamboat Annie Live) for a review of the musical content.

The DVD edition includes the full contents of the CD: a start-to-finish run-through of the "Dreamboat Annie" LP, plus encore covers of Led Zeppelin, The Who and Pink Floyd, and Heart's ode to "Stairway to Heaven," "Mistral Wind." In addition, the DVD opens with a contemporary interview of Ann and Nancy Wilson in which they discuss the band's early days, an interview with the original LP producer, Mike Flicker, and a montage of vintage photos. The encores are introduced by additional interview footage in which the Wilson sisters discuss their early influences. All in all, there's 82 minutes of performance and interview footage.

Both the interviews and concert are shot in wide-screen, and the audio is available in both stereo and 5.1 surround. Recorded in front of a hand-picked audience of Heart fan club members, the band is charged up (Nancy Wilson proves herself to be an especially animated guitarist), and the intercut shots of the crowd add to the overall excitement. A few members of the audience turn up on a bonus feature, "Heart Mongers Speak," in which they're interviewed post-concert. A low resolution photo gallery is also provided on disc.

The DVD is a nice bonus for Heart completists, but with the band letting the album itself take center stage, the visual element isn't essential to enjoying this nostalgic run-through of this classic LP. [©2007 hyperbolium dot com]

5.0 out of 5 stars Heading out to somewhere..., December 10, 2007

Ann and Nancy Wilson prove that, after over 30 years, the rock and roll magic is still there and hotter than ever! "Dreamboat Annie" put Heart on the map back in 1976. To be able to relive that magic with Ann and Nancy Wilson is an honor. The sound and video quality is superb! And the additional Zep songs make this DVD even more special! This is definitely a requirement for any Heart collection :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Heart Bliss, May 13, 2008
This review is from: Heart: Dreamboat Annie Live (DVD)
I first learned of this while watching DirecTV's channel 101 where they show lots of music related programs, and original concerts. I saw 'Heart - Dreamboat Annie' in the programming guide, and thought hmmm,, what's this? When I started watching it I couldn't believe it. Here was Heart performing their first album in sequence, start to finish. I was pleasantly floored. When I learned it was available on DVD, I was thrilled.

I have seen Heart live in various stages of their career, and oh sure I've heard Magic Man and Crazy On You live plenty of times,,, but have I ever seen, or heard Heart backed with strings, and all the instrumentation to perform all the songs on Dreamboat Annie? NO, not ever!!!!

So, do you need to be a complete Heart fan to enjoy this? Probably not, but it surely helps if you are a fan, and are familiar with the album. To me, it is a pure gem. Hearing songs like 'Soul Of The Sea', and 'How Deep It Goes' makes me appreciate, and love the album even more than I did. Watching them perform it live 30 years later also made me realize just how lush and accomplished some of the songs are especially for being a debut album! It also shows that a truly great album doesn't sound a bit dated, even after 30 years.

Also incuded on the DVD are interviews providing some insight to the albums creation, and at the end of the albums live performance, you are treated to Heart covering Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and The Who too!!

This is just a great idea, and here's hoping there will be many more in the 'Legendary Live Album' series. Imagine some of the possibilities??

I would pay triple the cost of this DVD, if not more... Blu-Ray please please please???

5.0 out of 5 stars Heading out this morning, into the sun..., May 4, 2008
This review is from: Heart: Dreamboat Annie Live (DVD)
You cannot review this DVD without watching it from start to finish.

Heart masterfully goes from start to finish playing live every song on their debut album "Dreamboat Annie." With a legendary album like "Dreamboat Annie," it's sometimes easy to forget just how magnificent each song really was. Gigantic rock bands like Heart are remembered by their hits, and there were certainly hits on Dreamboat Annie (Crazy on You, Magic Man). But what's often forgetten are the true masterpieces in the middle. Such as "Soul of the Soul," "Sing Child," and the 3 "Dreamboat Annie's."

Not only do they play the entire album, the encore features some powerhouse covers and classics like "Mistral Wind" from Heart's "Dog and Butterfly" album, as well as Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog."

Heart has not lost any of their touch. Nancy's raw and pure guitar playing exudes emotion, while the unmistakable powerhouse vocals of Ann Wilson, to this day, can give one chills.

This DVD release is why I love music. It takes you through a roller coaster ride of memories and emotions. Some of my own, and some of theirs. In some moments you just want to grab an instrument and rock with them, while others you cannot do anything but sit in awe and their pure magnificence.

True legends..don't miss this one folks, it's a keeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, December 5, 2007
This review is from: Heart: Dreamboat Annie Live (DVD)
I have been a Heart fan for a long time and I have to say they are at thier best LIVE! Since I became a huge fan in the early 80's my first purchase was not this first Album. So, it is such a treat to then get to hear it done in it's entirety live. The beginning commentaries from Ann and Nancy are soo cool. At one point Nancy states she used to be a better player 30 years ago, but I say she is better now! My favorite track is 4, "Soul of the Sea". Nancy's guitar playing is stellar! Soo beautiful! Everyone will remember "Magic Man" and "Crazy on you", but the real gems on this dvd are the tunes that were not popular on radio. Perhaps the coolest tidbits are of Ann playin flute on "Sing Child" and Nancy playin the blues harp on this same tune. As if the whole album played live seems like enough, they add 5 tunes at the end. Mostly covers and thier gem "Mistral Wind". Ann's vocals will blow you away! These ladies get better and better as each year goes by and it does not seem like 30 years have gone by after you watch this dvd! Get it now and you will be amazed and dazzled and in awe.

Some things get better and better with time, and Heart is just that! Dreamboat Annie live is a must have for all Heart fans. The original music, the encore, the interviews all make for a fun and rocking DVD. Every member of the band is spot-on and "kicks it out" with energy and joy and amazing talent. Wish I could have been there in person, but this is the next best thing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ann and Nancy Wilson Shine on DVD, November 27, 2007

This review is from: Heart: Dreamboat Annie Live (DVD)
Ann and Nancy Wilson kick things up a notch on this rousing live rendition of their legendary album Dreamboat Annie. This DVD is a beautiful representation of what the Wilson's have been up to recently, and show they can still rock as hard as ever. When I first watched the DVD, I was surprised at how breathtaking it really is. The footage is crisp and clear, and the sound is amazing. Live music really can determine if a band can still cut it live. This DVD shows that Heart is still alive and kickin!, and ready to put on one hell of a show. They takes us through the entire Dreamboat Annie album, from Magic Man to Crazy on You. The song Dreamboat Annie is ethereal and beautiful backed with a small string section. The biggest treat of all is when they preform The Who's Love Reign O'er Me. Ann Wilson will send chills up your spine with this performance. Watching her sing this song is worth the price of the DVD alone. The interview and small documentary on the band is a very nice bonus. Get this for anyone you know who loves Heart or Classic Rock music. It is a great holiday gift!
