Book Description

"Said the river to the seeker: 'Does one really have to fret about enlightenment? No matter which way I turn, I'm homeward bound.'" --Anthony de Mello

We are like bears pacing in a cage, Anthony de Mello says. Even if the cage is removed, we keep pacing in the same timid limits. We are afraid to get out. And we think that the only way out is by endless striving and thinking.

But this profound healer and spiritual master shows us another way. The Heart of the Enlightened, the sequel to the highly successful Taking Flight, contains more than two hundred of de Mello's favorite stories. Whether Buddhist tales, Hindu fables, Islamic sayings, or Christian parables, the stories de Mello has chosen are sure to seep through to the heart. They touch on relationships, human nature, service, spirituality, and enlightenment. These are stories to be read slowly and savored. They are the key to liberating us from all that would pen us in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stories with a purpose that is trusted August 31, 2000
Anthony de Mello's books generally fall into three groups - guided meditations; cross-cultural, interreligious, traditional teaching tales; and sayings of the Master in context. This book falls into the second category - traditional teaching tales. Fr. de Mello has categorized the stories into seven chapters: spirituality, education, authority, human nature, relationships, service and enlightment. Most of the stories are told without any "editorial" comments i.e. the author trusts the power of story. The selection is excellent coming from a wide variety of traditions and ages, including modern jokes such as "where do you plug it in?" when faced with a piano.
You can read the book straight through and get a lot of laughs or you can read it as intended, pondering the stories and risking having your life changed. The latter is the intend of the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Irresistible Stories for Life February 1, 2002
Anthony DeMello is a master of story telling. Here are more than two hundred of his stories belonging to various cultures, countries and centuries. They are classified under seven heads of Spirituality, Education, Authority, Human Nature, Relationships, Service and Enlightenment. The author takes credit for only stringing them together. They are highly thought provoking and illuminating. Nobody can resist a story and sometimes a story can change one's life.
Anthony DeMello was one of the great spiritual masters of our time. He was a Catholic priest of the Jesuit order, hailing from India. He died in New York on June 2nd, 1987. He has left behind a body of literature, which will continue to influence the world profoundly in the years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest book I've ever read January 3, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I don't think there's a way I can do this book (and its companion book Taking Flight) justice. Suffice to say that it spoke to me in a way that very little has since, or probably ever will. Perhaps a bit more explicitly: it set my soul on fire.

Anyone can understand these very short parables, regardless of age, culture, or faith. They read as funny jokes, as brief stories, as small reflections, as food for thought. They often seem slight, almost negligible in stature. Some are only a few words long. But as I've come to realize over time, less is more in this genre. There is a universe housed in each of these passages, enough to feed you for a lifetime. I hesitate to say it because it sounds like hyperbole, but if you read one book* in your life, I think it should be this one.

* Actually you should read Heart of the Enlightened + Taking Flight, which were originally published as a single book called Prayer of the Frog, but which were separated by the US publisher for some reason.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL Like De Mello's LIVE CONFERENCE On CDs March 17, 2009
By Cosmos
To begin, this is the companion to "Taking Flight" ++filled with Marvelous, possibly Life-Changing Stories. In India, these are called "The Prayer of the Frog" Volumes 1 and 2.

Next, De Mello's "Wake Up to Life" is a Live Conference; the only full-length Conference he ever allowed to be recorded. It is incredibly Powerful, possibly Life-Changing. He is with a Live Audience and telling many, many stories; so that is another Recommendation.... Blessings

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple yet profound stories December 17, 2013
These are very short stories by Tony De Mello, master of spirituality--Christian and Eastern. Instead of merely telling my opinion I will retell a story which I liked and which may give you an idea of the nature of the other stories.
There was an inn called the Silver Star. The innkeeper was having trouble getting cutomers so he consulted a sage. The sage told him to change the name of the inn to the Five Bells but to hang six bells outside. The innkeeper was puzzled but did as the sage said. And this is what happened. Every traveler who passed by went inside to point out the mistake. Once inside they were impressed by the cordiality of the service and stayed on to refresh themselves, thereby providing the innkeeper with the fortune that he had been seeking for so long.
De Mello's deeper spiritual meaning is based on a keen insight into human nature: There are few things that the ego delights in more than correcting other people's mistakes.

It is not easy to read one story and go immediately on to the takes time to
reflect and sink into the deeper meaning of these brief examples of everyday life
situations...but, I also found I couldn't read just one and put the book down. This is
a must have for anyone interested in their spiritual growth and insight!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Definite Must for Your Spiritual Library March 7, 2015
Format:Kindle Edition
Taking Flight and its companion Heart of the Enlightened [originally published as a single book called Prayer of the Frog] are beautiful texts, and are reflections of Anthony De Mello – a great teacher and with little doubt an enlightened being who Changed The Game.

Both books are made up of short stories and parables that are sourced from multiple religions, philosophies and belief systems: Christianity, Judaism, Hassidism, Buddhism, Sufism, Hinduism and Islam. This is the beauty of these texts and the beauty of De Mello – to recognize and accept wisdom from all sources.

DeMello was a master storyteller and understood the power and magic of the story as a vehicle for entertainment, education, personal growth and spiritual awakening.

Each story stands alone, and can be used as a springboard for meditation and as a departure point for the daily journey of self-discovery.
My kids – aged between 6 and 10 – also love the stories. When we are on hikes or eating together, they often insist that I tell one of his stories.

A definite must for your library.
