She has been teaching outside her guild since the late '80s with her partner, Jo Fifield, including a wool workshop at the AQS show in 1998. She now teaches solo, as well as writing, designing, and working part-time in a bookstore. REVIEW: A reader from Guilderland, NY says, "This book is great for the quilter who would like to try a different technique. The author gives helpful, concise, and not commonly known directions for working with wool. She advises the reader on where to find good wool, how to prepare wool, how to quilt with wool, and includes many wonderful patterns and designs that adapt well to wool. The sample quilts are folk-like in design and fairly easy for a beginner to accomplish."

About the Author

Her grandmother's quilts were brought out for special occasions. Her dad could fix anything and in fact made all their kitchen cupboards. Her mom was always making something, from candles to cookies to clothes. So it seemed natural for Lorinda to grow up valuing creativity and making things with her hands. She sewed, knitted, and embroidered before discovering quilting in the late '70s. While it was an art she knew she would take up one day, it took a push from a friend who wanted to exchange quilt blocks by mail to finally get her started. The quilt she made from those blocks is still in the frame! It is the process she enjoys more than the finished product. After teaching in a variety of elementary school settings and teaching substance-abuse prevention to people of all ages, Lorinda turned her teaching skills to quilting. She joined a guild in 1982 and was soon presenting programs and teaching workshops for the members. She has been teaching outside her guild since the late '80s with her partner, Jo Fifield, including a wool workshop at the American Quilter's Society Quilt Show in 1998. Having moved twice in the last two years, she now teaches solo, as well as writing, designing, and working part time in a bookstore. Lorinda enjoys original design, bright colors, and the folk-art look. She often combines applique with pieced work. Having begun sewing by making her own clothes, she frequently applies her quilting skills to clothing design and decoration. Her clothing and quilts have won many awards at local shows.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart-felt Wool Applique, October 7, 2000

This review is from: Heart-Felt Wool Applique (Paperback)
This is a very unique quilting book, it deals with making wool quilts from recycled garments. That's not to say that you couldn't make the quilts with wool yard goods. The beginning of the book gives you tips on collecting, instuctions on how to felt the wool, and the basic instructions for the applique. Plus there are individual instructions and patterns for 18 different projects. But, I think, the best part of the book are the illustrations, they are clear, concise, and easy to understand.

5.0 out of 5 stars heart-felt wool applique, November 17, 2000

This review is from: Heart-Felt Wool Applique (Paperback)
As a beginner, I found this book to be very helpful. I have shared my copy of the book with quilters, who have ordered their own copy after reviewing it. The author has carefully detailed all of the instructions to the patterns that are included. The text was easy to follow along, and there are many useful tips that are in the book.
