Review

"At first communion I was taught to say first thing every morning, Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in Thee!' Reading Father Kubicki's splendid book has only made that prayer all the more sincere and meaningful." --Most Reverend Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of New York

"A fresh and attractive reconsideration of this centuries-old devotion in the Catholic Church. Blessed Basile Moreau (1873), founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross, who entrusted his priests to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, wrote: 'The primary purpose of the devotion to the Sacred Heart is to return love for love.' Fr. Kubicki develops this theme in a way that speaks well to today's generation of believers." --Rev. Peter D. Rocca, C.S.C., Rector, Basilica of the Sacred Heart, University of Notre Dame

"I invite everyone to renew his devotion to the Sacred Heart of Christ in the month of June, making use of the traditional prayer of the offering of the day and keeping in mind the intentions that I have proposed to the whole Church." --Pope Benedict XVI, Angelus Address, June 1, 2008

Having a deep devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus has prompted me to read many books about the subject. The best book by far that I have ever read about the Sacred Heart of Jesus is Fr. Jim Kubicki's book, A Heart on Fire: Rediscovering Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

In A Heart on Fire, Fr. Jim delves into the history of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus tracing it's roots back beyond St. Margaret Mary and her call to bring attention and devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Returning to the earliest days of the Church and Christ's demand to St. Paul to stop persecuting Him through his torment of the members of His Church, Fr. Jim shows how devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is based on the Word of God and is first and foremost a Eucharistic Devotion which is just as relevant today as it was throughout all of Church history. Fr. Jim shows how the Heart of Christ continues to be in need of our prayers of reparation for sin and how His Heart desires our loving union with Him. He shares several ways that we can live out our devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through prayer and good works in this current age.

At the end of each chapter, Fr. Jim shares a prayer exercise that deepens our understanding and love for the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He gently guides the reader through a meditation with an image of the Sacred Heart, through a scriptural Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a historical perspective of prayers from some of the great saints of the Church, a lectio divina exercise, suggestions for a Eucharistic Holy Hour, prayers of reparation, the morning offering and a family Consecration Prayer Service.

A Heart on Fire is complete with some wonderful full-color images of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Sometimes people feel as if devotions such as that to the Sacred Heart went the way of the horse and buggy after Vatican II. Nothing could be further from the truth. If anything, we need these devotions more than ever in our modern world which so often forgets about God and the love of Jesus. In "A Heart on Fire: Rediscovering Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus," Fr. James Kubicki, National Director of the Apostleship of Prayer, explores the history of this devotion and its relevance for the world today.

He examines the history of this devotion, beginning with the revelations of God's love in the Hebrew Scriptures, followed by the life of Jesus himself, its manifestation in the writings and teachings of the early Church, followed by the visions of several saints, such as St. Lutgard, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Mechthild, and St. Gertrude the Great.

St. Margaret Mary is the saint most associated with this devotion. Jesus appeared to her four times in 1673 and asked her to have a feast instituted in honor of His Sacred Heart. In 1856, Blessed Pius IX placed the feast on the Church's liturgical calendar and in 1899, Pope Leo XIII consecrated the world to the Sacred Heart.

Fr. Kubicki also explores the connection between devotion to the Sacred Heart and devotion to the Eucharist. "Devotion to the Sacred Heart is simply a relationship with Jesus Christ that grows ever more personal and deep. What is the best way to develop such a relationship? The answer is simple: through the Eucharist." He also examines the relationship of the Sacred Heart devotion with that of Divine Mercy.

One of the most interesting parts of "A Heart on Fire" was an explanation of the parts of the Traditional Morning Offering of the Apostleship of Prayer.

I see I am only the 2nd person to review this book, but I cannot say any more that the other 5 star person. The book is excellent reading for anyone who has a devotion to the Sacred Heart or anyone who is interested in developing such devotion. I am still amazed at all the best kept secrets in the Catholic church and this devotion is one of them. Thank you Fr. Kubicki for a job well done good and faithful servant.

Having reticence to proceed with the Divine Mercy mandate because of multiple reasons, I found in this book a treasure! Not only does the author bring into discussion the DM practice but a whole history of like-minded sentiment. I felt drawn deeply into devotion to the Sacred Heart, am grateful for the explanation of its modern application, and continue to study and bring into my day-to-day thought and prayer its premise that we are all deeply loved by God in very personal ways.

Beautifully weaves devotion to the Sacred Heart into the context of our modern life without loosing it's essence or tradition. Delves into the history behind this devotion going back even before St. Margaret Mary received it from Jesus. The books progressive development of ideas presented in early chapters coupled with thoughtful exercises at the end of each chapter would make this a good book for a retreat or prayer group.

Full disclosure: I received my copy of "A Heart on Fire" from its publisher, which also publishes my own "My Peace I Give You." That said, I would have needed this book for my library in any case, because it is the best guide to Sacred Heart devotion that I have found. Father Kubicki runs through a lot of history in "A Heart on Fire"'s 175 pages, tracing the devotion from its scriptural roots through the writings of Church Fathers, many saints, and the papal magisterium. I was particularly taken with his insights into the Gospels and learned a lot from them. His experience as a retreat director shows in the beautiful way he illumines Scripture, making this one of those rare books that is good both for educational purposes and for spiritual reading.
