Macie Connor is in a dating dead zone. She registers for internet dating and ends up with more misses than hits. Even making a wish and tossing a coin into the park fountain before each new meeting isn't helping. (Quit it, Macie!) Her latest scheduled meet is with Kenny - an arrogant, corporate type who's more concerned with keeping his $1000 loafers dry than talking with Macie.
Realizing she is better off, Macie cuts her losses, steps out on a limb and invites her next internet friend, James, to meet her in the park. This turns out to be a very bad idea as James is actually Rylan Vaughn - ex-boyfriend of Macie's dead sister, Karen...her murdered dead sister. Initially considered a suspect, Rylan had been cleared of any involvement in Karen's death. Despite that, many still looked at him with suspicion, including Macie's parents...and Macie. And if that wasn't enough to complicate the situation, Macie has been attracted to Rylan since he and Karen first started dating. The guilt weighs on her.
After finally agreeing to meet with Rylan, Macie finds out he's found the laptop that went "missing" when Karen was killed. They realize Karen was killed for what she knew and began their own investigation before going to the police. Meeting up with Karen's former coworkers and friends, not to mention questionable accidents and apartment break-ins keep Macie and Rylan busy, but not busy enough to keep them from exploring their mutual attraction.Read more ›
This is my review:
Macie has been in mourning someone has killed her sister Karen and they still haven't found the killer. She has been trying to get her life on track, she has been dating online with a couple of guys. They haven't been worth her time. This guy name James and her meet at the park by the fountain and she realizes it is Rylan James is his middle name and it's the guy Karen was dating before she died. Macie and police thought at one instant he could be the killer but he had an air tight alibi that he didn't kill her sister.
He had contacted her because he had moved and he was going through his stuff and he found Karen's laptop in his chest in the hidden compartment and he wanted Macie to know. She didn't know what she wanted to do she didn't want to have to see Rylan again cause it just bought too many painful memories of Karen dying.
Macie and Rylan ended up cracking her code and didn't see why she go to the length to hide her files and computer. They think someone wanted the computer and that is why Karen got killed and why she hid the computer at Rylan's house before she died.
Macie and Rylan (well mostly Macie pokes around) at a function held by Karen's old job that honors her. and It doesn't go well for Macie at the train station waiting to go home someone pushes her hard good thing she wasn't closer to the track. She gets to Rylan's house as fast as she could. Then someone lights her car on fire, sending her a warning.Read more ›
From the start, this book was interesting. I should note clearly that it reminds me a lot of her "Dominating Billionaires" series, with the intrigue, the corporate malfeasance, and the rather strong male character.
Positives: I love Malia Mallory's ability to, in a few paragraphs, set a scene and project characters. Within two pages, I had a sufficient understanding of Macie and her plight, and within a few pages of Rylan's introduction, I knew he was not what he appeared. Silly note too, I loved her abortive date with Kenny because I think everyone has had a date like that.
Negatives: This is minor at best, but I could have used a little more depth on the ultimate antagonist for the story. Yes, we got a general sense, but there were too many gaps for me to really see the character as more than a cartoon villain. Again, this is minor, but the character needed a little more explanation for me.
Overall, the plot was a fun adventure, and as always, Ms. Mallory's use of language to describe intimate scenes is tasteful, smart, and just steamy enough to make it interesting. I look forward to what phrases and words she will use in a given situation because, unlike some writers, she seems to give special attention to word choices.
Honestly, this book was, for a single self-contained story, slightly more engaging than "Dominating Billionaires," simply because the characters were so authentically interesting.
