The Zarkons only made two albums. HEART FULL OF SOUL was the lead track on their second (and last) album, Between the Idea and the Reality... Falls the Shadow. Yeah it's a long album title, but it puts the music into the right perspective. It's moody, angst-ridden and even gothic. HEART FULL OF SOUL is their one cover tune on the album and it's arguably the best on the album.

This track is moody in all the right places. The lead vocals come out raspy and rough like a traveling song. The female harmony vocals bring a very soulful and haunting touch like a gothic opera. The band is a synth and guitar group so there are some interesting arrangements playing along the music too. It really makes for a good song.

So here I am talking about how good the music is, but what's the deal about it being flawed? The flaw, and a major one I might add, falls into the drums. You see they use a drum machine on this record (even though the band has a real drummer) and whoever programmed the beats on that thing go way too trigger happy on the chorus. It reminds me of the kinds of drum beats high school teens put together when get their first drum machine. This is evident on most of the songs on that album. It really puts the music to a lower level then where it can rise to. I'm guessing they didn't have the resources to record a live drum track what with all the mics and equalization and audio tracks that takes up.

Now this 12" single isn't what you think it is. It's a promo album with the album version of the song on both sides. There is no 12" remix or extended mix or a Justin Strauss acid mix or anything like that on here. If you like post modern or gothic music I think the Zarkons will be a pleasant, if not perfect, addition to your music collection.
