Excellent Overview of Heart's Career,
By Lonnie E. Holder "The Review's the Thing" (Columbus, Indiana, United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)

As with any rock group that has been around for many years, Heart has a number of collections. This one is one of the several collections you could own that serve different purposes. If you want to focus on Heart's early years, "Heart - Greatest Hits" mostly covers the early years of the group. "Heart - Greatest Hits - 1985 - 1995" covers Heart's later years, missing only the 2004 release of "Jupiter's Darling." If you are looking for an overview of Heart's career, there are two collections, the two-disk "The Essential Heart," released in 2002, and this collection. "The Essential Heart" is a more comprehensive collection, and I recommend that one over this one. However, this collection is a second best behind that collection. This collection has 17 songs over varying source. Some are live and some are variations from the original studio album releases. Here is a brief overview of the songs, their album, and their chart position in the United States: (1) Crazy on You: from Dreamboat Annie; highest chart position: #35. (2) All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You: from Brigade; highest chart position: #2. (3) If Looks Could Kill: from Heart; highest chart position: #54. (4) Never: from Heart; highest chart position: #4. (5) Alone: from Bad Animals; highest chart position: #1. (6) Who Will You Run To: from Bad Animals; highest chart position: #7. (7) Straight On (Acoustic): original from Dog and Butterfly; highest chart position: #15. (8) Magic Man: from Dreamboat Annie; highest chart position #9. (9) What About Love: from Heart; highest chart position #10. (10) Dreamboat Annie: from Dreamboat Annie; highest chart position #42. (11) Dog and Butterfly (Acoustic): original from Dog and Butterfly; highest chart position #34. (12) Nothin' at All: from Heart; highest chart position #10. (13) Heartless: from Magazine; highest chart position #24. (14) Stranded: from Brigade; highest chart position #13. (15) Will You Be There (In the Morning): from Desire Walks On; highest chart position #39. (16) These Dreams: from Heart; highest chart position #1. (17) Barracuda (Live): original from Little Queen; highest chart position #11. I am a big fan of Heart and love their vocals and their music. Heart was one of my favorite groups in the mid to late 1970's, and one of the few successful hard rock groups led by women. In the 1980's the group mellowed and aimed for more of a pop audience, but they still managed to knock out some wonderful songs, and their voices are incredibly distinctive. Heart is much more low profile these days, but "Jupiter's Child" got generally good reviews from fans. If you are looking for a good overview of Heart's career, the two best choices at the time of this review are this CD and "The Essential Heart." I do recommend the latter album, but this one is a good second choice. This CD can be purchased for significantly less than the latter CD, and is more focused on hits, and may be a good choice for many customers. Enjoy!

Heart made it look easy. In a time when women in rock were novelty items (and their record company exploited that novelty in the early days), Ann and Nancy Wilson just decided that Led Zepplin was the blueprint and took it from there. This version of a Heart's Greatest Hits was released on Capitol in 1997 and has been since been supplanted by the "ESSENTIAL" Heart collection. But it was the first to pull tracks from their entire career, from the still stunning "Crazy On You" to the acoustic gem "Dog and Butterfly," then the eighties comeback days of power ballads like "What About Love" and generic arena rock in "If Looks Could Kill," Heart was a band that knew how to cover the bases.

All a casual fan needs.,

This is one of many Heart collections around, however it's also out of print I believe. That amazes me because I find this to be the best one. "These Dreams" is more complete than their early hits disc or their later hits disc, and not as bloated as the 2-disc "Essential" collection. Every track a casual fan might know is here, be it classic Heart, or 80's Heart. Many of these I forgot about, and this reminded me of how great and underrated Heart is as a band. I also found out what a headphones-classic "Magic Man" is. I would find this used before getting another disc.

It's A Shame That This Is Out Of Print,
This review is from: Heart Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Covering their entire career up to the mid-90's, this "Greatest Hits" album from Heart is one of the best collections around. It covers all of their major tunes that any radio fan would easily recognize. It includes an excellent live cut of "Barracuda" and all of their early hits such as the blistering "Crazy On You," "Magic Man," and an acoustic take on "Straight On." Also included are later, arena-oriented rock hits like "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You" and "Alone." Granted, Heart mellowed out quite a bit during the 80's, but they still made some excellent music. There are other more complete compilations out there for the listening audience to purchase. I won't argue that. However, for fans of Heart's radio releases, this album is one of the best around. It gives you a healthy dose of the 70's and 80's best tunes from the band, as well as a look into their live sound. If you can get your hands on a copy of this album, I highly suggest you pick it up.

It's ok but I would not waste my money on it. I think the only way to get great Heart tunes is to buy them seperatly. It seems like all of their albums have more horrible songs then good ones and of course the good ones are not together and in the middle of the album. So I say x-ay to this one.

Heart: THESE DREAMS-HEART'S GREATEST HITS (1997),
By Chad DeFeo "(ChandlerBingFan)" (Philadelphia, PA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Heart Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
In 1997, Heart released their fifteenth album entitled, THESE DREAMS-HEART'S GREATEST HITS. This album is actually a greatest hits compilation that features only the hits that were from the CAPITOL RECORDS released albums. You'll notice that three hits from DREAMBOAT ANNIE and one hit from MAGAZINE are on here. You're thinking: "But those two albums were not from Capitol Records direction, they were from Mushroom Records direction". Well, when Heart signed with Capitol Records in late 1984, early 1985, Heart's contract with Mushroom Records was null and void, whereas Capitol Records bought the rights to both DREAMBOAT ANNIE and MAGAZINE. This is a great album, for it features many of my favorite Heart songs from my favorite era of Heart's career.CRAZY ON YOU From the album DREAMBOAT ANNIE (1976). An awesome tune. Love this one. ALL I WANNA DO IS MAKE LOVE TO YOU From the album BRIGADE (1990). Awesome power ballad. IF LOOKS COULD KILL From the album HEART (1985). A great song from my favorite Heart album. Love this tune. NEVER From the album HEART (1985). Another great song from my favorite Heart album. ALONE From the album BAD ANIMALS (1987). This is the only version of the song that I really like. I do not like hearing it in an unplugged version. Everytime they perform this live, they always perform the unplugged version, even when the concert is not an unplugged concert. WHO WILL YOU RUN TO From the album BAD ANIMALS (1987). Great song. STRAIGHT ON (Acoustic Version) From the album THE ROAD HOME (1995). Original version from the album DOG & BUTTERFLY (1978). Great song. MAGIC MAN From the album DREAMBOAT ANNIE (1976). Great tune. WHAT ABOUT LOVE From the album HEART (1985). Awesome power ballad. DREAMBOAT ANNIE From the album DREAMBOAT ANNIE (1976). Great ballad. DOG & BUTTERFLY (Acoustic Version) From the album THE ROAD HOME (1995). Original version from the album DOG & BUTTERFLY (1978). Great song. NOTHIN' AT ALL From the album HEART (1985). Another one of my favorites. HEARTLESS From the album MAGAZINE (1978). Not one of my favorites. STRANDED From the album BRIGADE (1990). I'm still trying to convince myself that Nancy sang this one. I always assumed that it was Ann singing this song, since it sounded like Ann singing. Not one of my favorites. WILL YOU BE THERE (IN THE MORNING) From the album DESIRE WALKS ON (1993). Great tune. THESE DREAMS From the album HEART (1985). My all-time favorite Heart song. I will never get tired of hearing this song. BARRACUDA (Live) From the album ROCK THE HOUSE LIVE! (1991). Original version from the album LITTLE QUEEN (1977). Love this song and this live performance. Great tune. I know that there are a lot of songs missing from this album, especially for the '70s Heart fans. That is only because it is a greatest hits compilation that features only the Capitol Records released hits. But this is still a great album. |
