Book Description

Lady, an Irish Setter puppy, is leading a simple life on a farm in Ohio during the 1940’s. Lady’s biggest desire is to become an expert hunting dog like her mother. She has no idea that her life is going to take her down a path where she will find herself in the middle of incredibly dangerous situations, including a world war. On several occasions, Lady will have to find the courage to risk her life in order to save someone she loves. The loyalty and bravery that Lady shows throughout her lifetime illustrate what it truly means to have the heart of a hero.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for kids and animal lovers! March 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is a great story on many levels. If you have a young reader interested in dogs, action stories, or WWII historical fiction then they will all find something to hold their attention in this book. If you are an adult reader that likes dogs then I am sure you will enjoy it as well.

I love books that are based on a true story. I consider myself to be pretty familiar with WWII history, but I never realized the role dogs played in the Pacific theatre.

I hope everyone has a chance in their life to know a dog like Lady.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for children and dog lover's alike! July 3, 2012

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Great, Great book. This is a surefire hit with youngsters. But I will add that adults should read this book too. It is very well written with fantastic character development (I love Lady)! I am a huge dog lover (my current dog is a "senior" lab mix I adopted from the local animal shelter) and this is about as good of a book for dog lovers as I have found. I am not ashamed to admit, having lost my 1st dog & best friend, that there were a few times during this book that tears came to my eyes, but in the end it was entertaining, moving, and enjoyable. Well done, I am anxious to read Heart of a Hero next (the dog on the cover looks a lot like my dog:) This is a must have for all families!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Awesome...Awesome...Awesome!" says dad and daughter December 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
My 10 year old daughter and I read this book together over the course of several nights! This is perhaps the best book that I have ever read with her! We often found ourselves laughing out loud. It's a very hard book to put down (both for me and my daughter). She told me how much she enjoyed the book. If you love dogs, like we do, this is a MUST READ! We will definitely read more books by this author!
I was blown away by just how much this book drew us in! This is a great book to read together with your 10 year old!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read! January 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Wonderful book for readers of most ages. With themes of bravery, loyalty, service to nation, and love of animals, the reader is drawn into the story. You may want to wait to share with very young readers, as there are some mild scenes of war and injury, and lives passing on. Really a must-read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing! May 13, 2012
Format:Paperback
Heart of a Hero is the story of Lady, who has always wanted to be a hunting dog like her mother. In the story we follow Lady's life right from a farm life to a messenger dog to a hunting dog to girls pet. It's a story of love, loss and hurt as Lady loses her owners to war and to death. She feels connected to Carl and Steve yet, she has to adjust over and over again in her life as she is handed over from owner to another.

The thing about books is that each reader has the option to receive it the way they want to. In this case, I choose to take away a valuable lesson that both these novels portray - that dogs are more humane than humans at times and their loyalty can never be questioned. Also, in times of war and violence, there's still some hope for humanity.

3.0 out of 5 stars Heart of a hero December 19, 2012

It would be a good book for a younger reader due to its simplicity but I felt the themes are too deep for that age category.
