3.0 out of 5 stars Should have been two books
This was one of those books that seemed like the author had two good ideas and put them both in one book. The two main story lines, while interesting, were only tenuously connected. Each would have made a fine book; there was no reason to put them together. The ending, particularly concerning the Beta Zeta killer story line, was very abrupt and rather unsatisfying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hardcore Thriller!, March 5, 2009
This review is from: Heart of Ice (Paperback)
Fans of Gregg Olsen's last book, A COLD DARK PLACE, will be thrilled to see the return of Emily Kenyon. In HEART OF ICE, she is the sheriff of Cherrystone, Washington. She's in a serious relationship with Chris Collier and he's pushing for marriage. Her personal struggle in this relationship adds realism and dimensions to this character's personality. This same care is given to each character of the story making this an engrossing read.

As with his previous fictional books, Gregg Olsen jumps right into action with a missing pregnant woman, Mandy Crawford. When she isn't found, her husband becomes the lead suspect. At the same time this investigation is going on, three bodies are found in three different towns. This is why the police didn't tie the murders together. It was Emily's daughter, Jenna, who discovered the three were friends of hers, sorority girls from college. Little did she know, she'd been the intended target for one of the murders.

Olsen has a rare gift of adding strong multiple sub-plots to the story without confusing the reader. Each adds a new twisted addition to a tightly woven tale. Without a doubt, he is one of the best writers in this genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart Of Ice, March 4, 2009
This review is from: Heart of Ice (Paperback)
Originally got hooked on wanting to read this book just from the snippet at the end of the last book. Finally saw it out on the shelf, bought it and had to fight my son off to read it first.

As usual, Gregg Olsen came through with a book that every time I got ready to put the book down another good twist came up and I just had to read more. Now I'm just waiting for the next one to get here too....Heart of Ice

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! A Must Read, August 6, 2009
This review is from: Heart of Ice (Paperback)

Gregg Olsen scores again. Warning, do not start this book if you have company coming and your house needs cleaning or I'm afraid you will have a house that needs cleaning when the company arrives.

Once again the characters in this novel are so real that it feels like you are a part of the story and it is almost impossible to put it down until you have finished it. I really liked the way he used two investigations in this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Taut pacing, the pages wll fly by, July 3, 2009
This review is from: Heart of Ice (Paperback)
I discovered Gregg Olsen last year when I read A Wicked Snow, a very taut and fast paced thriller. At the end of the book was a teaser for his next book. So when I saw Heart of Ice, I picked it up and realized part of the way in that this was actually a different book, a sequel to the book A Cold Dark Place. Normally I would stop reading and get the other book because I hate to read series out of order. I was so caught up in the story already there was no way I was going to stop reading.

Heart of Ice focuses on two separate murder investigations, one involving a missing woman, Mandy Crawford, who Sheriff Emily Kenyon believes has been murdered by her husband, although she only has circumstantial evidence. At the same time a serial killer has been attacking college sorority girls, and soon it becomes clear that Sheriff Kenyon's daughter Jenna maybe his ultimate target.

Once again this is a suspense book that moves fast and can be very graphic, especially in detailing the brutal childhood of the serial killer. The characters are quite believable although the solution to the serial killer storyline seemed very abrupt, the Mandy mystery had a very believable ending with a good twist.

Two small complaints must be mentioned. One is the idea that this is apparently not the first time that Jenna Kenyon has been the target of a killer, a coincidence that was a little far-fetched. The second is the depiction of the sorority girls, it was very cliché. My daughter is in a sorority that has one of the highest GPA's in her college and as a whole the Fraternities and Sororities across the country raise millions of dollars for charities every year; so even though this was fiction I wanted to mention that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gregg Olsen makes Stephen King look like Walt Disney!, May 1, 2009

This review is from: Heart of Ice (Hardcover)
Mr Olsen's book kept me riveted from page one to the end, where upon I immediately ordered the rest of his works creative artistry. The story twists and turns like a body swinging from the gallows. His charcter development makes the feelings of the players almost palatable to the reader. This is a TRUELY terrifying book honestly deserves to be in the HORROR category!

5.0 out of 5 stars Olsen leaves you wanting more, March 25, 2009
By
Bookreporter (New York, New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Heart of Ice (Paperback)
A few years ago, Gregg Olsen made the transition from writing true crime novels to penning thrillers with killers more frightening than most readers could imagine. A COLD DARK PLACE introduced Washington Sheriff Emily Kenyon. HEART OF ICE, Olsen's latest work, marks Kenyon's welcome return, ties up a couple of dangling plot lines from the previous book, and features a murderer whose acts and life will keep you up for nights on end.

The most riveting element of HEART OF ICE is the manner in which Olsen takes two different story tracks and slowly draws them both toward resolution. What makes the narration engrossing is the difference between the two tracks. One involves a mysterious serial killer whose identity is almost immediately revealed. Michael Barton is an extremely competent if somewhat unconventional systems technician, as admired for his work as he is secretly ridiculed for his eccentricities. His wife, Olivia, and children adore him, even as they sense that something is amiss.

There are two elements concerning Barton, however, that Olsen slowly and excruciatingly reveals. The first concerns the fact that Barton has a list of victims targeted for murder and is methodically working his way through them, saving his major target, Jenna Kenyon --- Emily's daughter --- for last. It is a mystery throughout most of the book as to what links the names on Barton's list and, most importantly, the reason for his pursuit. The second element is Barton's nightmarish past, particularly his childhood, events that play a significant role in his current nefarious activities.

The second story track of HEART OF ICE pertains to Sheriff Kenyon's investigation into the mysterious disappearance of Mandy Crawford. Mandy is the wife of Mitch Crawford, the owner of a local car dealership made famous by his father, who apparently did not pass his gifts of personality and charisma on to Mitch. Mandy, whose pregnancy is almost at term, has been reported missing by her co-workers, and Mitch is relatively unconcerned, which raises both the specter of foul play and places Mitch at the top of the list of potential suspects.

When Mandy is found brutally murdered and Mitch is arrested, Emily must deal with Cary McConnell, Mitch's attorney. Emily and Cary had a short but intense relationship some time before, and the contact with Cary both reminds her of that fact and disgusts her. In gathering proof of Mitch's complicity in his wife's death, however, Emily uncovers another secret that makes the case far more complicated than it was and threatens to shatter forever the disturbed demeanor of the small, usually quiet community she polices.

Be warned: Olsen does not pull punches with his descriptions, and the villains of his pieces are the stuff of walking, and waking, nightmares. Those who walk among us as serial killers did not spring into being from whole cloth, and Olsen, whose research on such topics is matched by few, brings a believability to his subject that rings and resonates long after you've finished reading. Conversely, he also leaves you wanting more, which he generously provides: an excerpt from his next novel, VICTIM SIX, follows the conclusion of HEART OF ICE.

... in this rather odd novel. Not only do we have multiple serial killers in this timeframe, apparently the main character's daughter had a run in with one several years prior. The entire premise was wholly unbelievable.

The case of the missing pregnant woman was the most interesting plot in this book, and really needed to be at the forefront. The real antagonist in that case was obvious very early on, which made the second half of the book tedious as you waited for everyone else to catch on.
