A historically impacting drama,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Heart Like a Wheel [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This little gem of a movie has inspired so many people to achieve their goals in life. Everyone has seen this movie but no one wants to admit that they have watched it over ten times. A notorious time filler for HBO in the early 80's, Heart Like a Wheel is an epic drama with major historical impact. I raise a glass to you Shirley and may your heart and wheel spin as one.

This is a movie that I could watch over and over again. (Still waiting for the DVD version) The story is touching and poignant. It is inspiring for all women who have felt that ceiling that stops us from succeeding and shining in life. Also to be noted...look for a very young ER star as Bonnie Bedelia's son.

In this movie, Bonnie Bedelia portrays real life drag racing pioneer Shirley Muldowney. Bonnie brilliantly captured Shirley's firecracker no nonsense essence. You feel the triumphs as well as the setbacks that Shirley went through to ensure her racing dream became a reality. This was an excellent movie and I hope that it gets re-released on video.

While I admire her Racing ability and the movie sure depicts that,I do not admire her private personal life,Yes Her First Husband what he did was not Right but how can you leave behind a Son?"If you Need anything Call Grandma"..yes later he worked for her,And then go off with a Talented yet Creep Like Connie? Her life would have been alot more interesting if she had more morals,The racing footage is good And the Early 50s Drags as well As the Corvette,But This whole WomenLib/Fem/PostFeminist mumbo jumbo cannot take away the fact you would leave a Kid behind for Ambition,I dont care if your a Woman,Man,Green or blue. Anyways my favorite Feminist is Phyllis Schafly. the movie is worth watching but she ain't no hero.

Shirley's Startling Story,
By
This review is from: Heart Like a Wheel (DVD)
This a pretty interesting based-on-a-true life-story of hot-rod racer Shirley Muldowney. Bonnie Bedalia plays the woman who was a pioneer of her sorts, becoming the first female star in thay sport. Whether her life was one big soap opera, I don't know, but the movie concentrates on that sort of thing.
Shirley had to fight a lot of obstacles to become the first female star of drag racing. However, the constant arguments with her husband (a very profane Leo Rossi) and then with crew chief-former lover Connie Kallitta (Beau Bridges) wore thin after awhile. **spoiler alert** One very, very memorable scene in here: Muldowney on fire, stumbling down the racetrack after her car caught on fire. That was horrifying and a scene I've never forgotten, and I first saw this over 20 years ago. Other that that, it's a so-so story and better than so-so if you don't let the language bother you.

Older NHRA fans delight,

Does the names Big Daddy, Don Garlits, Connie Kalitta or Cha Cha Muldowney get your motor running? If you are a true NHRA fan and old enough to know these names then you are going to love Heart Like a Wheel from beginning to end. Even better is this video comes packaged with a genuine Hot Wheels dragster that is a replica of Shirley's car. Loved it, loved it, loved it. Safe enough for all ages to watch!

Like most Hollywood biographies this one takes some liberties with the facts but even saying that, this is one of the best auto racing films ever made. Maybe I'm jaded a little because my love of the early years of drag racing. This film brings back vivid memories of my own days at Fremont Drag Strip in California, a track like so many others that has been torn out and lost forever. Lion's in Long Beach, Half Moon Bay, the list goes on and on and all have been lost, never to return. This movie gives us old Gear Heads a little rise and it's also a great and true story.

I SAW THIS MOVIE ON HBO IN THE 1980'S WHEN I WAS A KID. IT WAS A PRETTY GOOD MOVIE ABOUT A WOMAN BECOMING A SUCCESSFUL RACER. I THINK THAT THE MOVIE WAS GOOD AND THE ACTING WAS SUPERB. AND I DID WATCH THIS MOVIE OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
