This was my first novel that I ever read. The book was given to me from my aunt Betty, that is no longer living. I will always be greatful to her for turning me on to reading. I have read many books & can't remember most of the titles but this one & the sequel Mixed Blessing are forever in my mind. I even remembered that the lead character was named Elizabeth. I bought both books again and plan reading them again but this time I wont' give them away.

One of my 'all time' favourite books I would like to see it come in a Kindle edition so I could have it forever. My hard cover and soft cover editions have long since fallen to bits.

This is the type of book you can get lost in. The story is mainly about Elizabeth, her loves, her children, and her friends. Her growth is tremendous from an idealistic young woman to a woman who has experienced many of life's joys along with sadness. She always perseveres, though.

I love to read specially romance novels and biographies is not necesary special reason for read but if you want to learn you have to read.L

I have all Helen van Slyke's books. i have had this one for 10 years or so. It is unputdownable, you will get lost in the lives of Elizabeth, her friends, family and children. It charts her life from birth to end and continues on in the sequel Mixed Blessing. HVS is one of the most wonderful writers. She is a marvelous storyteller, she has clarity and depth. I wish her books were still more available to people. You will love this book and her others.
