The Heart of the Order is an enjoyable and interesting book, not only from a sports orientated point of view, but it is also a touching, warm and humorous human interest story. I recommend anyone who enjoys a good, relaxing, informative book to pick this one up. It's a home run!

This review is from: The Heart of the Order (Paperback)
I am not your normal sports or baseball fan, but I have to say that his book certainly transcends all other genre. It is truly a human interest story of tremendous portions. Angelo Saverino has a unique and distintive writing style. His writing grips the reader, you can't wait to turn the page to see what happens next. I strongly recommend The Heart of the Order for your summer reading while relaxing at the beach.Betsy

This review is from: The Heart of the Order (Paperback)
The author has written a book about his personal and professional relationship with sports figures, with a concentration on the New York area Baseball scene, and that's enough for me. When I read a fewpages I could see it was alot more than what it was like to meet a figure you've seen hundreds of times on a TV monitor and in a uniform. The book causes one to reflect poignantly on a period in Baseball history when the heroes were "working class heroes" - as they are today - but who remained in the working class after their fame. In the 1970s ballplayers sometimes had to find supplemental work - like playing in exhibition games in outside sports to their own. The descriptions of players transitioning from the diamond to the court are very entertaining. I'm sure scores of young fans imagined what it would be like to chat informally, to break bread with, to visit their idols at their homes. What where they like...sitting around the house. In reading "The Heart..." they can get a strong idea. In the paragraph above I referred to "young" fans. All fans are young when they root for their team, or compete on their own team. This book will transport you back in time, to when you first visited the big ball yard on 161st; or saw a starting shortstop walk through the crowd waiting near the players' parking lot, in the direction of his car, and actually speak to *you* about...his flat tire. |
