The pleasures offered by anthologies are often muted and ephemeral--the pleasure of the encounter with the familiar, the inevitable choice, the kind of poem that allows one the smug sense of commonality--"I would have chosen that one, too." [There are also the pleasures for the dyspeptic type, the snarls about perfect choices excluded, inferior performances honored, the writing of a nasty letter denouncing the perfidy of the editor.] These are not worthless pleasures, but they may lead to the dusty back of a remote shelf where the book waits for the moment when failing memory needs help with that very same poem I would certainly have chosen.

The pleasures of this splendid anthology of baseball poems are different--the presence of poems by poets one would not have expected to write about baseball; the surprise of really good poems about baseball that force a completely different perspective or feeling about the experience of the sport; the ability of a poem (not any specific one here, but the aggregate power of poems about the sport) to bring back from the depths of memory Sportsmans Park and the St. Louis Browns. I have already benefited from the easy choice of a birthday present for two good friends of baseball, and have two copies (in addition to my own) waiting for the appropriate upcoming dates. Anyone who knows anyone who loves baseball will want to have this book at hand. Gabriel Fried is an editor with a sharp eye who has pitched a perfect game.

Two of my favorite things located in one place:

I ordered this anthology because my son has a poem that appears in it, but I'm reading it with a good deal of pleasure. I like to read about ten pages of poetry every day, so I'm only a little over halfway through it, but I've been very pleased with the poems. The title may suggest a gimmicky editorial policy, but the quality of the work is excellent. Baseball turns out to be every bit as inspirational as love and war and the more traditional themes that inspire poetic language. For me, the poems illustrate how those things that occupy us while seemingly very tangential are excellent ways of exploring what makes us human.

Baseball and poetry a match made in heaven. Watching the speed beauty and grace of a triple, the pitcher
throwing the ball, and the fans rising and falling pitch by pitch. This is wonderful. The cover "caught dreaming"
by artist Lou Grant is a perfect choice. One of my boyhood friends has a poem in the collection, so that
added to the sheer joy of it all.

It does not get any better.

As an avid baseball fan and a long-time reader of poetry, this is the book I've been waiting for. It's such a fun and well-curated collection...highly recommended!
