Book Description

December 4, 2007
No devil is as wicked as what lies in the soul of man.

The Beast has taken just about everything it can from Sylvester Logan James, and for twenty years he has waged a vendetta with silver bullets and a perfect willingness to die. But fighting with monsters has consequences other than death.

His feud has made him a villainous hero whose only virtue is the greater evil of his adversary. The struggle has twisted his conscience and tangled his spirit, leaving him embattled by occult machinations and a newfound fear of damnation. Though haunted by cryptic nightmares and insatiable guilt, Sylvester’s own resolve will not let him surrender to an easy death, but goads him into pain he cannot turn and spiritual anguish that will not be ignored.

Like a wounded animal orchestrating its own destruction, Sylvester must contend with the ancient werewolf, Peter Stubbe, as well as the cannibal demon the First Nations call Windigo. With the vigor of his pathos drained to the dregs and his existence unsustainable, his only hope is to die with some fractional token of his soul intact.

The Cheyenne spirits have named him Heart of Scars.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Brian Easton is a master storyteller who makes you feel like you are right there within the addictive storyline.

From the Author

A sequel should not be the re-telling of the original story, but should re-invent the parts that worked. Heart of Scars is different from Autobiography of a Werewolf Hunter in two important ways, mentioned here by way of introduction.

Heart of Scars covers a time period of about one year, whereas Autobiography spanned decades. Because of this the reader will detect, by necessity, a different rhythm from the first.

The second book also has a more somber tone than its predecessor as it explores the spiritual realm and its influence on the main character. This is a decidedly more violent novel as is unavoidable in the development of a character whose sense of hatred is as intense as Sylvester James.

Readers who enjoyed Autobiography should not anticipate a re-tread in this second book, and should be ready for a more solemn, brutal phase in the evolution of a werewolf hunter. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

More About the Author

The son of a Southern Illinois pastor, Brian Easton grew up a fan of classic horror films during the 70's. His favorite, as you might imagine, was The Wolfman.

"When I was a baby, my mother used to rock me while watching Dark Shadows. I cut my teeth on a steady diet of Creature Feature and Night Gallery, the old school Universal Monsters and spaghetti westerns. I started writing when I was ten, after I was given a hand-me-down Royal typewriter."

He has studied the occult since 1985 and obtained a degree in anthropology to further his research. His first novel Autobiography of a Werewolf Hunter (aka When the Autumn Moon is Bright) and his second novel Heart of Scars were finalists in the 2003 & 2008 Independent Publisher Book Awards.

"I'm a sucker for tragedy and anti-heroes. Even the most unscrupulous character can become the good guy when pitted against an evil greater than himself. My novels, 'When the Autumn Moon is Bright' and 'Heart of Scars' feature such a protagonist and deliver an autobiographical account of the awful price of hatred. It tells the life story of Sylvester James whose life is tragically altered by a marauding werewolf, and what happens when he hardens his heart to vengeance. As he becomes a man, he learns that it takes more than just silver bullets to kill a werewolf...it demands a perfect willingness to die. A third book is planned to complete the trilogy, and after that a prequel chronicling the life of Sylvester's mentor."

5.0 out of 5 stars A Different Book from the First---But No Less Fascinating, June 7, 2008
By
Easton's first book in this series, When the Autumn Moon Is Bright, told the story of how Sylvester Logan became an orphan and evolved into a fanatical werewolf hunter. This second book chronicles his descent into the bottom of a horrific well of his own hatred, where he transforms into a human monster even more fearsome--and no less depraved--than the beasts that he hunts. Although he becomes possessed by a Wendigo's spirit, the reader infers that Logan's psycho/physical deterioration and monstrous bloodlust are more the result of his own personal demons than the sole fault of the Wendigo.

This book introduces some really interesting new characters. This second work also has a different flavor than the first book; it reads more like a James Bond spy adventure, with some dabbling in arcane black magic. But Heart of Scars is no less convincingly well-written than Autumn Moon, and no less capable of suspending the reader's disbelief, despite its greater emphasis on the metaphysical angle. And I love how the author dissects human psychology without getting boringly clinical. The remarkable thing about the book is that the reader comes to feel genuine sympathy for Logan, even though he's not a very likable person much of the time.

Heart of Scars takes some shocking turns as it resolves the mystery about what really happened to Logan's parents and reveals the true cause of the deaths of Logan's wife and son. I won't give away the ending, other than to say it is surprising.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart of Scars, July 1, 2008
Heart of Scars, the sequel to When the Autumn Moon is Bright, is rougher, harder, tougher than the first book, but well worth the wait. Easton takes Sylvester Logan James on a journey that delves into bloodlust bordering on aberrant sexual behavior, yet the entire while never manages to lose the reader's empathy for Logan. This is a masterful story, told with the artful hand of a master storyteller. I was captured at the first page and finished the book in a short amount of time - when is someone going to take both of these books and make them into the screenplays they so richly deserve?

5.0 out of 5 stars not your your parents' horror novel, February 2, 2008
a different kind of book. combining the talents of old school storyteller and an intense researcher brian easton has outdone himself yet again. this book delivers both the heart pounding action and heart breaking sincerety and pain that made the first of the series so memorable. in this installment sylvester logan james again faces a world inhabited by very dangerous monsters as well as a soul corrupted by his own actions and an ancient evil more powerful than he has ever faced. while the book is ultimately a horror story it carries off elements of a high noon western, an intense internal drama, and a international political thriller with equal enthusiasm and merit. it is rare to find a book that contains both intense ferocity and incredible tenderness and while the viscera is far more present the tender scenes are written with the same conviction. this book will satisfy any fan of the genre and then some. so what are you waiting for?
