1.0 out of 5 stars "Don't Stay/Test Me"

Wow! The only Nirvana single to feature a David Ghrol original is Kurt Cobain's shining moment!

And the lyics to Milk It actually are:

"Don't Stay/Test Me"

5.0 out of 5 stars The one single that showcases Cobains lyrical genius..., January 23, 2003
This review is from: Heart Shaped Box (Audio CD)

Heart-Shaped Box:
Subtly opening with a single guitar strumming, the frontman for Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, exposes his sensitivity. The soft lyrics seem to echo from a dream. A hazey world near the end of Cobain's demise. The video even shows the band in a bizarrely odd fantasy landscape. Twisted trees, and an old man on a cross wearing Santa's cap, a little girl in a white klu klux clan-like outfit skipping through the poppy fields. An obese woman dressed in an anatomical skin-tight outfit, adorned in feathery wings. At the end Cobain and company can be seen at the side of the old man's death bed. Patiently waiting for him to pass on. The energy here seems unrestful, eager, and aggravated.

All this imagery is what you get with the song Heart-Shaped Box. Flagrantly good lyrics entrance you, for example:

"Meat-eating orchids forgive no one just yet,"

"Cut myself on Angel's hair and baby's breath."

"Broken hymen of your highness, I'm left black."

"Throw down your umbilical noose so I can climb right back."

This is just too good. The song reverbrates between melancholy, and fierce aggression, classic Nirvana style, but with the rough guitar flavoring that In Utero has to offer. In my opinion, this is the best that Nirvana has to offer. It encapsulates Cobain's emotion, his moody ups & downs, and Nirvana's awesome artistry. Dave Grohl excellently balances the song with his gentle drumming, and then his ear pounding resonation for the decidely aggressive parts. Krist Novoselic also submits what Cobain calls (and I paraphrase), "a really good bass line".

The second song on this disc, "Milk It", was often quoted by Cobain to be the future sound of Nirvana. With a more jaded sound, very rough, tired, and abbrasive... this song goes a long way to represent the entire album and Cobain's mood during those times. The whole song teeters on topics of mortality and conditions of the human body with lyrics like "Obituary birthday, you're scent is still here, in my place of recovery."

A little jewel awaits you on the final track of this single. Dave Grohl usurps Cobain, a hint of the future at that time. Grohl takes to the guitar and microphone, revealing one of his laundry room studio creations. "Marigold" is his mellow and sleepy masterpiece. The song seems inspired by the present Cobain, and bellows forth likeness to songs of Nirvana like "Dumb" or "Polly", but with a more softer inclination.

This is without a doubt the best single from In Utero. Heart-Shaped Box is a masterpiece to be rivaled with.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Nirvana great plus an early Foo, June 29, 2000

The reason for my title is simple once you buy this great cd, Dave Grohl has a song he wrote, sings, and plays guitar for while Kurt does the drum. This alone is reason enough to buy this cd. Heart-shaped Box is a great song, and so is Milk It with top of the quality Cobain lyrics. Like the person below, the cover is also a great reason to have!

5.0 out of 5 stars Foo Fighters' Prequel Overshadowed, January 7, 2006
This review is from: Heart Shaped Box (Audio CD)
If you just want "Heart Shaped Box", you're best off just buying "In Utero". The first b-side is also on In Utero.

The important thing on this album is its weakest track. Dave Grohl's only composition to be released under Nirvana, "Marigold", is on this single. Unfortunately, the song was placed behind two of Kurt Cobain's strongest compositions.

"Heart Shaped Box", along with "Rape Me", "All Apologies", and "Pennyroyal Tea", is one of the jewels of In Utero.

It's a better deal to buy the Singles Box if you want b-sides

4.0 out of 5 stars Pre-Foo Fighters Dave Grohl!, May 6, 1998
This review is from: Heart Shaped Box (Audio CD)
The great thing about this CD isn't necessarily the Nirvana songs. Heart Shaped Box can be found on In Utero (a must buy), and can be heard in several different collections, live recordings, etc. The gem on this single is the song "Marigold", written and performed by Dave Grohl. Although technically a Nirvana song, Marigold is a good example of Dave Grohl's musical ability, and a soft, eerie sneak preview of the Foo Fighters to come. Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart-shaped box single, July 1, 2001

Im a huge Nirvana fan, so this review might be a little biased. But why buy this if your not a huge fan? Anyway, I digress. This is a great price for this rare CD. The songs are all great, my favorite being Marigold, Dave Grohl's own vocal production. This is definitely worth your money. Grohl really shows his talents off here on this small preview of the future foo's phenomenal frontman. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nirvana's greatest moment?, June 20, 2001
This review is from: Heart Shaped Box (Audio CD)
Anyone who has heard Heart Shaped Box will probably agree that it is one of Nirvana's best tracks, not only for the sublime guitar riff but for the sheer quality of the writing (which, as always, is unsurpassed). Fragile B -Side, Marigold is written and performed solely by Dave Grohl and justifies you shelling out for this CD rather than surviving with the album version of HSB. ...I recommend you seek out the singles box set that includes all the releases from Nevermind and In Utero and costs much less than it would be to buy all the singles individually.

5.0 out of 5 stars an absolute classic single, April 29, 2000
This review is from: Heart Shaped Box (Audio CD)
I once had this single, but my brother sold it to someone when I moved out of my house. I wasn't happy believe me. I am planning to order it again. It is honestly a must, especially with the cover of that CD. It is gorgeous! The lyrics caught my attention on this song, "she eyes me like a Pisces when I am weak...I wish I could eat your Cancer when you turn back." The song is tender, angry, trapped seemingly and lovelorn.

5.0 out of 5 stars I DEDICATE THIS TO CATARINA, April 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Heart Shaped Box (Audio CD)
This is the best song written by Kurt, because it's really deep, we can easily find the enchantment of his lyrics, by only listening two or three times the beautiful song.I dedicate this song to a very close friend of mine called Catarina Dias, it was my song and hers too. So i thing that every one should by this Single if they like Nirvana, and it's cheapier too, in Amazon.com.
