I am not kidding- this is a funny book. It's also pretty clear the guy is in love with Sonoma, and has found lots of good reasons to be. If you like lots of smart humor, and you like mild skewering of the moneyed set and their minions, you'll probably like this a lot. I have lived in Sonoma County a long time, and was surprised after I read awhile to have dawn on me slowly what a unique and interesting place we live in- have just gotten used to it, I guess. The stuff he talks about is why, for my vacations, I just go to a different part of the county.

I think there was more caffeine than wine involved in writing this. The guy jumps around like crazy, but that's the spirit of the book- I liked it. It felt like a mildly drunken, barely-planned wine tasting trip, and made me want to get out there to do that again. I got a few leads out of it on things to do, and a few sayings to appear clever at the wine bar (the kettle as "the new black"; Sonoma mashed into S'noma, which stands for Speak Not of My Alcoholism). But mostly I just really enjoyed a better-informed, fond tour through our wedding-catering-fueled culture.

Smart, funny, drunk. The perfect lens on wine-country living for those of us who don't like to decorate. Or have a house. If you've ever wondered what it's like to live, love and wake up with a hangover in paradise, strap on your wine-goggles and read this book.

I Heart Daedalus Howell's book.
D.H.'s relationship with Sonoma is as complicated as the one in Fifty Shades of Grey, although the only pain inflicted and suffered while reading will be when your sides hurt from laughing so hard.
His meanderings through the vicissitudes of wine country life are always fun. While sipping from a brown bag with tourists along the bike trail or holding a Riedel glass with raised pinkie, D.H. takes us on a romping tour behind the scenes of the wine biz and into the politics of living in a small town that should be focused on tourist business, but clearly isn't.
Read what it's like to live in Grapeville. Reminiscent of Hunter S. Thompson's Gonzo style, sometimes self-deprecating, sometimes fabricating, always entertaining, Daedalus Howell is unique.
