From the Inside Flap

Australia’s First Families of Wine, launched in 2009, is a collective of twelve multi-generational family-owned wine producers. Together, the families represent seventeen wine-growing regions across Australia and forty-eight generations of winemakers.

The aim of Australia’s First Families of Wine is to showcase a representative and diverse range of the best of Australian wine with a focus on regional and iconic drops. The collective if working to engage and educate consumers, retailers, restaurateurs and the wine industry across the globe about the real character and personality of Australian wine, and about the unique characters and personalities behind it.

The inaugural members of Australia’s First Families of Wine are Brown Brothers, Campbells, d’Arenberg, De Bortoli Wines, Henschke, Howard Park, Jim Barry Wines, McWilliam’s, Tahbilk, Taylors, Tyrrell’s Wines and Yalumba.

From the Back Cover

‘A family winery is not just the wine in the bottle, it’s the soil under your fingernails, it’s storms and spring sunshine, tears and laughter, and customers who become family friends.’ – Isabel Campbell, Widow of Third-Generation Winemaker Allen Campbell

Families have been the traditional of Vineyards in Australia, as they have been throughout most of the world. Families nurture their vineyards and get the best of them, often against the odds. The passion they have for their ‘patches of dirt’ – their heart and soul – passes from one generation to the next, and you can taste it in their magnificent wines.

This book brings together the stories of twelve of the families who pioneered the Australian wine industry over generations. These are the household names of Australian wine, from the grand old dame Yalumba, founded in 1849, through to new blood Howard Park, founded in 1986. With more than 1200 years of winemaking experience between them, the families’ stories are as rich and varied as their produce: from Murray Tyrrell’s creative use of rockets to protect his vines from hail and the McWilliam’s shotgun-toting, boundary-setting family feud, to Bill Taylor’s tears at the chainsawing of his vines following a damning (but short-lived) public health warning about the dangers of red wine.

In Heart & Soul, you’ll discover the essence of Australian wine, from grape growing to dinner table, with all the characters and stories in between.

This is a very special book, that shows how deep the roots of wine culture have reached in Australia. Wine is truly a family business, more than most other trades it involves the whole family, directly or indirectly. Thus Australia is not in fact a New World for wime, it has wineries going back centuries, with families going on for generations. The book shows passion. It is also well structured, thanks to the author's outstanding acadmic writings. It is a most useful book. I kmow it has been translated into Chinese, I hope it will be in Other languages

Great book about Australian Wine and the families responsible. Gives insight into the areas that are not covered by just drinking the wine.
