4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting..., June 30, 2007
This review is from: Heart and Soul (The Hunters, Book 8) (Mass Market Paperback)
HUNTERS: HEART AND SOUL is essentially one story with two romances, divided into two separate sections. In "Soul of a Hunter", the plot focuses on Leandra and Mike. For over 5 years, Leandra has been haunted by her past. Leandra had fought as a member of Scythe against the Hunters, not realizing that she was fighting on the wrong side. No one blames Leandra more than Leandra herself. Will Mike's love be enough when danger strikes?

"Heart of a Hunter" picks up right where "Soul of a Hunter" concludes, but from the perspective of Kelsey and Malachi. Leandra encourages Kelsey to talk to the Council's captive and it is only then that Kelsey recognizes what has occurred. Determined to stop the Council's execution order, she seeks out Malachi. Will Malachi's anger over the recent events blind him to what Kelsey has to say? And what will become of the powerful attraction between them?

Shiloh Walker takes a very unusual approach with HUNTERS: HEART AND SOUL. Broken into two parts, "Soul of a Hunter" and "Heart of a Hunter" are essentially two very hot romances and yet the ongoing thread between the storylines makes them basically one story. The stories must be read in the right order due to the ongoing thread that links the stories together, but to reveal more about this thread would be a spoiler.

"Soul of a Hunter" will probably be better appreciated by fans of Ms. Walker's Hunters series as it jumps rather quickly into the midst of the plot. While I have read HUNTING THE HUNTER, I haven't read any of the other Hunter books and initially was a bit confused as it almost felt as if I'd missed a previous episode. However, as the story progresses and the action begins to kick in, the plot begins to coalesce just a bit.

With "Heart of a Hunter", the true genius of Shiloh Walker begins to shine. The plot moves along rapidly as all of the pieces begin to come together. While I wasn't overly enthusiastic about "Soul of a Hunter", the series of events is necessary for "Heart of a Hunter" to even occur. In some ways, HUNTERS: HEART AND SOUL is really the story of the Hunters as a whole, as events occur that will surely impact them all. There are some dangling threads that remain unresolved and one expects that these threads will be picked up in the next book in this series.

Shiloh Walker has obviously spent a great deal of time in crafting the world of the Hunters. The premise is absolutely brilliant and overall I enjoyed this book. Perhaps a brief introduction or recap at the beginning of the book would have resolved some of my initial confusion and helped ease me into this very complex world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you Shiloh!, May 19, 2007
This review is from: Heart and Soul (The Hunters, Book 8) (Mass Market Paperback)
I have been waiting for Malachi and Leandra forever and I was not disappointed. Maybe Mike and Leandra could have ended alittle better but...

I am SOOOO happy she did not wimp out Leandra or Kelsy. Shiloh is one the few authors who can write a lead fem with stregnth and angst without all the weak female whinning[..]. Adding coffee to the cream with Mike and Leandra was wonderful. So rarely do we get to see interracial relationships in this genre and Shiloh keeps my sista girl strong and true even with all of her emotional baggage and keeps the sexy HOT HOT HOT. I loved how Mike held his ground with her.

Malachi is as Malachi does and I was not disappointed. It was a GREAT story with all the sexual tension...and release so many of us crave.
It was worth the wait for me.

Chronologically, this is actually book 9--the events here occur between Hunting the Hunter and Hunter's Salvation.

Also, disregard Harriet's review--what she says is not correct about the stories. They are not reprints and she summarizes them incorrectly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good addition to the world of The Hunters, January 24, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
As previous reviewers have pointed out, this book consists of two shorter novellas, which in turn are part of Shiloh Walker's Hunters series. Both tell the stories of characters introduced and developed in previous books. Heart of a Hunter involves Leandra and Mike, and Soul of a Hunter involves Malachi and Kelsey. I would highly recommend reading the previous books in the series before reading this one, as the previous story and character development are essential to fully understanding the plot, and address some weaknesses in character depth that may be seen if the book is read as a stand-alone.

I viewed Leandra and Kelsey as two of the most interesting characters in The Hunters world, and was slightly disappointed that Ms. Walker chose to tell their stories in this limited format, rather than giving them each their own book. Leandra and Kelsey are both strong female characters, before, during, and after they fall in love, without taking anything away from their male counterparts, or the romance, and it would have been great to read more about them.

The overarching story flows fairly seamlessly from one novella to the next, and rather than excelling as individual romances, the book is an exciting and interesting addition to the events in the world of the Hunters. It makes you wonder just what is going to happen next. (For those who actually are wondering, the next book in the series, Hunter's Salvation, is one of Ms. Walker's best works to date.) I would recommend this book as a fun and quick beach read to fans of the series, and would recommend the whole series to fans of paranormal romance.

2.0 out of 5 stars A big mess of paranormal, but give emphasis to the erotica., December 5, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
2 paranormal erotica stories, the "Soul of a Hunter" with Mike and Leandra
and the "Heart of a Hunter" with Malachi and Kelsey, are included in this
installment by Shiloh Walker.

In terms of publishing, I can say it was a good move switching from Ellora's
Cave 'cause the author's work feels much more coherent in terms of the typed
structure of the scenes, syntax, grammar and spelling (a problem that her
previous work suffered from with EC publishing).

In terms of writing... ***MILD SPOILERS AHEAD OF THE PLOT***
Mike and Leandra.
Leandra is a character we saw first in Jonathan and Lori's story in the camp
with the villains. A former member of the Scythe, Leandra was a powerful witch
that after an enlightenment and a bite from a rogue vampire, became Malachi's
protege and was brought to Eli's enclave to train as a Hunter (as a vampire
now) but lives there as an outcast.
Mike, a natural born shapeshifter watches Leandra ever since she first shot
him while he was protecting Erika -a 12 year old member of Eli's enclave-
from getting kidnapped by Leandra. Years passed, Leandra was pardoned and Mike
finds himself in love with his former attacker, while Leandra doesn't seem to
forgive herself for the wrongs she had served and feels that she doesn't
deserve him. A villain makes an appearance and threatens Leandra's wellbeing,
and a big fat mess throws the plot in the supernatural depths of dreamland.

Lots of things in this plot just didn't make sense to me. Paranormal romance/
erotic romance/erotica are my fav genres, but the supernatural element here
was just off. The story had a dynamic in the beginning but as it progressed it
got more and more anticlimactic, with the villain of the story taking up too
much space but failing miserably to entice something short of boredom out of
me.

Malachi and Kelsey
Probably the story where the money was supposed to be. I don't get it why
authors insist on manufacturing characters that are millennia old and have
them acting around like 16-year old teens. Malachi was supposed to be a two
thousand year old vampire that exuded menace and aggressive sex appeal,
desperate and sad because in the long years of his life he hadn't found a mate.
Then why was he acting either like a spoiled brat or a kid that lost its toy
during the entire story? Again, the laws that governed their paranormal world
left me yawning and totally indifferent, while the inconsistency in the main
characters and the lack of depth of the plot ruined this story for me.

I guess I made a mistake when having depended on reviews, sums and excerpts of
the "Hunters", I had gotten excited to find a new paranormal erotica series to
entertain myself with and I purchased the first "Hunters" books with Mal's being
the last one, all-in-one-order. And being an obsessive-compulsive reader that I
am, I read them even to just form an opinion though they felt a waste of my time
(and money). I will not err about this again. Malachi's story was my final
chance to like this series and it has positively failed to keep me.
