Editorial Reviews

Being that her career has flowed through R&B, soul, blues, pop and jazz (and one label after another), Etta has not seen anyone try to tackle a truly comprehensive anthology. Now, we have it: 280 minutes of her finest Modern, Argo, Chess, Warner Bros., Fantasy, Island, Private Music and RCA Victor recordings from 1955 to 2008! At the tail end of that time frame: her unissued recording of Rodney Crowell's Ashes by Now . From the top: her first Top 10, The Wallflower , and a heap of hits and key album cuts: Good Rockin' Daddy; All I Could Do Was Cry; If I Can't Have You; My Dearest Darling; At Last; Trust in Me; Don't Cry Baby; Something's Got a Hold on Me; Stop the Wedding; Pushover ; tracks from her Grammy-winning Mystery Lady album; unreleased gems; duets with B.B. King, Sugar Pie DeSanto, Harvey Fuqua, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson and more. A 60-page booklet walks you through one of the most storied careers in American music.

Etta James burst on to the scene in the ever-changing musical fifties, first scoring major hits in Rhythm & Blues field, crossing over early sixties to Top Forty big-time with timeless classics "Trust In Me", "At Last", "All I Could Do Is Cry", "Stop The Wedding", "Something's Got A Hold On Me", "Only Time Will Tell", "Pushover", "Tell Mama" and other notable hit performances, making this remarkable artist first "The Queen Of Soul" being title of 1964 scorching classic Lp from the great musical sixties. Featured in this superb "Heart & Soul" collection are two sublime Rhythm & Blue chart hit duets "Do I Make Myself Clear?" and "In The Basement" with blues legend Sugar Pie De Santo, charged with fiery soulful intensity, these engrossing tracks should have been Top Ten cross-over hits but didn't receive deserved Top Forty airplay. Etta James recorded so many memorable Lp's over a fifty-plus year stretch yet this spectacular Four Disc Retrospective still finds stellar classic works missing & slipping through the cracks. Leaving the great musical sixties, music lovers had no idea this wondrous era was sadly coming to a close hard and fast, label head Leonard Chess passed away leaving Etta without this major support figure in her career...entering to musically strange anti-vocal talent seventies, shifting to a dull Singer/Songwriter trend where radio programmers & avant-guard type music critics duped an unaware audience in to thinking having a great voice was not a "cool" thing, next on to years of dizzying swirling Disco, yet all the while this peerless singer held her own in amazing peak vocal form during a musically bankrupt period sadly continuing to date, managing to turn out three stunning timeless masterworks sounding as grand and artistically revelant today as when first released.Read more ›

Wonderful box-set from Hip-O-Select again. Etta's 50 year's plus recordings on this set is absolutely fantastic! The sound of the recordings is outstanding, everyone of it!

This is the box-set to buy if you are just discovering Etta James or anyone familiar with the Etta James- The Chess Box Set of 2000, buy it too! The Chess box only covers the Chess years, 1960-1974.

This box-set covers the complete recording career from Etta James which started in 1954, with THE Richard Berry on the male part of the song " THe Wallflower (Roll with me Henry)" as an answer song of Hank Ballard's "Work with me Annie. This box-set ends in 2007. This set will give you the complete range of genres in which Etta has been active: blues, rhythm & blues, pop and Jazz....

The CD-1 has the Modern and Kent recordings plus a couple of Chess recordings. On this set there is one more recording with Harvey Fugua ( Moonglows) with is not on the "Chess Box set": My Heart Cries.

CD-2 will give you more Chess recordings from 1962-1969 with a couple of songs which are not available on the "Chess Box Set".

CD-3 has 12 more Chess recordings and added are some Warner Bros. recordings of the late 1970's and a beautiful unissued song written by Stevie Wonder: Higher Ground.

CD-4 is for me the most beautiful of this set. This CD travels further and deeper into the Jazz field and all selected songs are absolutely jewels, just waiting for you to discover. On a couple of songs on this CD Etta is accompanied by her 2 sons, Sametto James on bass and Donto James on drums!

Superb quality sound and a really nice package. But, it's disappointing that if Hip-O Select sampled some of the Modern recordings, it's a shame they couldn't shoehorn in "Fools We Mortals Be", a particularly nifty performance.

Also, apparently, her two big hits, "Next Door to The Blues" and "Something's Got A Hold On Me" were recorded in New York and the multi-track tapes have never been found, so they're mono here.

Finally, I could swear I have heard one or two of the 3 excellent Etta & Harvey duos in stereo; they're in mono here.

All in all, everything else that she was known for is here and you'll never find these classic soul recordings sounding any better. (Notice, I said "Soul" and not "Blues". Upon her passing, the press refered to her as a "Blues" singer. She was no more a blues singer than Aretha Franklin or Ann Peebles would be considered a blues singer. Just because she spent time touring the blues clubs later in her career does not make her a blues singer!)
