5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a American collection of a underrated band!!, June 13, 1998

Well its about time we see a collection from this great pop band. If you liked Heart and Soul and wondered what ever happened to that catchy british group well wonder no more. T'pau had several other big hits in Europe just as great as Heart and soul and they are all here in one collection with liner notes by Carol Decker (lead singer). If you picked up the first album in 1987 and liked it then you will most likely like the rest of the songs on this long collection. You get your moneys worth. It includes China in Your Hands, Secret Garden, Only a Hearbeat, and many more. This has the same track listing as the import with two more songs. Only complaint is there are not b sides. Virgin is a stingy record company! Long live the 80's!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not your best option..., February 23, 2007

Naming a compilation of songs by one band can be tricky. Greatest Hits is a common choice, even though there are often selections included that wouldn't otherwise be described as hits, let alone the greatest of them. Another popular option is to go with The Best Of... or, as in this case, The Very Best Of..., which practically begs the group's hardcore fans to disagree, and that is most certainly the case I have with this particular collection. Most of the songs here are indeed fantastic, but the careless omissions easily disqualify it from being labeled as the band's very best work.

T'Pau's third album, The Promise, had its best material largely ignored. The title song, as well as A Place In My Heart, Hold On To Love, and Strange Place could have done well on the charts had they been released as singles and would be ideal choices for a compilation such as this. Only one, however, (A Place In My Heart) made the final cut here, and that, I guess, is a small miracle when you consider the fact that the original import version of this collection (that has the same cover but is listed as Greatest Hits: Heart & Soul) skips all four of them completely.

The best and most comprehensive collection of theirs is the 17-track disc that is simply titled Greatest Hits. It includes all of the European singles on this disc plus the four songs I mentioned and is about as good of an overview of the band as you could ask for. In 2005 it was reissued with the same 17 songs, a different cover, and an even shorter title (Hits), and either one of them would make for a more satisfying investment.
