Book Description

April 1, 1999
In the small town of Green Hollow, New York, the Lockley Arms hotel stands as the meeting place for a coven of witches. When the hotel's owners perish in a mysterious car accident, the coven's leader searches for suitable replacements, for the coven membership must equal 13. The teenage twins who live across the street from the hotel volunteer to join the witches's circle. But during their apprenticeship, an evil force kidnaps several of the town's little boys, and the coven must pool its power to combat this sinister threat.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

As children, twins Shelley and Kip Davies were fascinated with Lockley Arms, the majestic Victorian inn across the street from their house in the sleepy, idyllic town of Green Hollow. Late one winter night, the siblings trespass there, and Kip is shocked into a temporary coma-like state by forces that Shelley suspects are otherworldly. Later, as teenagers, they find themselves working at the Lockley Arms and their suspicion of innkeeper Miss Mansell and her guests mounts. Discovering a witches' coven, they decide to join it, entering a world of rites, ceremonies and magicAand an apparently loving community. But evil forces are at play in Green Hollow: a kidnapper and murderer emerges in the town, and dead owls keep appearing near the hotel. Shelley, fueled by jealousy and the conviction that her new community has betrayed her, unearths the coven's long-kept secrets, producing an outcome both surprising and tragic. While Hawkes's (My Soul to Keep) penchant for repeating and italicizing significant phrases is annoying, and her exploration of a sexual relationship between the twins is unnecessarily salacious, she has created a satisfying story of mystery and magic that only occasionally flags.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read one, went right out and bought the other two!!!, August 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Heart of A Witch (Paperback)
As a 57 year old Wiccan, I bought "Heart of a Witch " and Loved IT! Went right out and bought her other two books and liked them also. This book IS propaganda for Wicca in the nicest possible way. I do not know who her teacher was, but Ms. Hawkes certaintly did a positive review of the craft. We are seldom treated so well. Enjoyed the entire story, keeping in mind it is mystery murder fiction. Looking forward for more. Is there a fan club?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Captivating Book, January 30, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Heart of A Witch (Paperback)
Have you ever wondered what goes on at your neighbor's house? "The Heart of a Witch" tells the story of Kip and Shelley Davies. Kip and Shelley are twins who've always felt a connection with the Lockley Arms Inn across the street.

Even in their childhood Kip and Shelley were fascinated with the Inn. They would always sneak over to investigate. As they get older, they get jobs at the Inn and spend most all their time there besides school. The story unfolds when the twins discover a secret and get pulled into it. The things that they went through changed their lives and their feelings. They could never go back to reality again.

Judith Hawkes writes of supernatural happenings and paints a picture with her words. The life of Shelley and Kip with their strange world will captivate and pull you into the story. It will change the way you think about life, and not let you put it down until the last sentence.

Ms. Hawkes~~~Please write a sequel to this book! Or at least write another book that is similar...This is the very best wiccan "escape" book that I've ever read. The characters, the place, the images...stay with you a long, long time. I loved it!!!
