Nice try but no dice; Apathy is the only emotion I have for this read.,
This review is from: Heart of the Wolf: To win her, he must fight to the death... (Mass Market Paperback)
Plot Summary: It goes against my feminist nature to have a heroine who can only protect her man by staying away from him forever, but Bella's hands are tied in this patriarchal wolf world. She flees her own pack when the alpha tries to repeatedly rape her when she was still a juvenile (in the 1850s). Her true love, Devlyn, was sure to be the loser in a fight against Volan, so Bella moved to Portland, Oregon. Cut to the present, and Bella's undercover existence is blown when she's accidentally captured in wolf form by some zoo-loving, ignorant do-gooders. Horny wolves come out of the woodwork, including Devlyn, Volan, and psychotic lonely `reds' from the local pack.
It's hard for me to stir up any emotions for this book. I don't love it, I don't hate it, I just don't care all that much. I know one thing for certain -- I don't ever want to be a female wolf in this paranormal world. Bella has zero control over the choice of her mate, and anyone who can rip out Devlyn's throat can claim her as his personal trophy wife. The only way she can take a stand is to run away, which explains her 150-year self-imposed exile from her own pack. It was almost comical how many wolves wanted a piece of Bella. It's like she was the only drop of water in the desert. The sex scenes with Devlyn were spicy at the start, but after a while it actually felt monotonous. When the couple started tracking down the mysterious killer within the local `red' wolf pack, I started speed reading until I reached the big fight scenes at the end. Mercifully, the fights were short and I finished the book. Heck, I'm bored just writing this review. It's past time to move on. I can't recommend this one unless you are rabid to read anything containing werewolves.

Good story, but...,
This review is from: Heart of the Wolf: To win her, he must fight to the death... (Mass Market Paperback)
I loved the storyline of Heart of the Wolf. I loved the characters.
I didn't love how it was written. The same phrases are repeated constantly, and the fight scenes are short and have a severe lack of description. I only read all the way through because I wanted to see how things between Bella and Devlyn turned out, but I can honestly say this book has literally put me to sleep more than once.

The first chapter set up such potential. We're introduced to Bella and Devlyn, our main characters, and the tension between them and their pack leader, Volan. In hopes of saving Devlyn's life, Bella abandons the pack that took her in and she starts a lone wolf life in Oregon.
The author sets up a murder mystery, but everything is predictable. The villains are easy to spot. There are absolutely no surprises around the flimsy corners Spear sets up. There isn't even any tension in the wolf fights--and does she have any idea how injuries work? Tearing out a throat doesn't cause instant death; it would be bloody and gruesome with a lot of twitching as the wolf bleeds out. Bella is very whiny and unsympathetic, with absolutely no faith in the man she claims to love. And Devlyn is just atrocious. Any man who coos those nicknames at a woman isn't the type to be potential leader for ANYTHING, much less a pack of wolves. I'd like to give her props for some originality--most don't consider wolf breeding when werewolves have kids, so the triplets and quadruplets were a nice touch--but it just falls flat in the bad story-telling, terrible dialogue, and awful characters. Why bother with the review, then? Because I could actually finish the novel. Bad as it was, it was more like a train wreck, so it kept my attention with how Just Plain Awful this novel turned out to be.

I really liked the characters and the plot. However, for about 150 pages the book just repeats itself. The characters just stay in the house and have sex. They even have the same conversations over and over again. There is absolutely no progression in the storyline - either of the murder mystery or the challenge with Volan.
There are also annoying inconsistencies. For example, the friend/neighbor apologizing for not being around much now that she met a guy and they have started dating/begun a relationshiop. Well, according to the story, they have been dating for four days. That just seems odd to me. I finished the book (suprisingly) just to see who the murderer was. I liked the plot and characters enough to give the author another chance, in the hopes that her writing evolves. However, I will be take the next one out of the library.

BETTER THAN AN UNISOM!!!!!!!,

This review is from: Heart of the Wolf: To win her, he must fight to the death... (Mass Market Paperback)
I bought this book because I read a couple of the first reviews. What a disappointment! The narrative is not coherent, it has repetitive scenes with a lot of filling. Some chapters don't even have a logic sequence. Like someone mentioned in another review you get lost just flipping the pages and trying to connect the scenes. You never get to know anything about the couple except that they have the hots for each other. You can not even understand the reasons for the things they (anyone in the book) do. The action scenes are poorly described and extremely short.
If you really want to read this book just borrow it.

Heart of the Wolf does not disappoint. The interaction between Bella and Devlyn singes the page and you will find yourself pulling for these two! The story is addictive so if you're looking for an engaging, sexy read with a hot alpha male - this is the book for you!

disappointed!,
This review is from: Heart of the Wolf: To win her, he must fight to the death... (Mass Market Paperback)
I wanted to like this book, because I loved To Tempt the Wolf, but I was terribly disappointed with it. The dialog was unnatural, with characters seeming to say things that repeated plot elements the author thought readers might be too stupid to read between the lines and understand on their own. I like my dialog to flow more naturally. The writing and plot were stilted and choppy, and the story did not flow smoothly. To be honest, I am shocked by the editorial reviews, which I read after trying to read the book. To me, it is almost as if this book was written by someone else, and not by the same author who wrote To Tempt the Wolf. Now I am wondering if that book was a fluke, and all the author's other books are like this one. If so, it will be the last I buy.

Heart of the Wolf is a sexy werewolf romance with lots of action to keep you on the edge of your seat and riveted throughout the night. I fell in love with the multi-dimensional characters, especially the yummy-hot alpha hero. The complex plot kept me guessing about what would happen next. I've never been to Oregon where the story is set, and I enjoyed seeing Portland and the surrounding area through the author's beautiful descriptions. I highly recommend this book!!!

I read the other reviews and was excited to read this book. Blah! The author jumps erratically through the narration. Several times I turned the page and then had to check to the page numbers to make sure that I hadn't turned two at once. Turn the page, new thought, location and action with no connecting link. This could have been a great book with a little more editing and polishing.

Werewolf Romance,
This review is from: Heart of the Wolf: To win her, he must fight to the death... (Mass Market Paperback)
Bella is forced to flee her adopted wolfpack to avoid becoming mated to alpha,Volan. Volan had already tried to force himself on her making her fear him as well as hate him. Bella doesn't want to leave Devlyn, the wolf she has always loved, but she knows the only way they could be together is if he killed Volan for her. Besides, he has never given her any indication that her feelings were returned.
Bella lives in a human society for one hundred fifty years but she never forgets Devlyn in all that time. Even though a lot of time has passed, she knows Volan will never stop looking for her and will deliver a harsh punishment if he ever finds her. One night when she is in wolf form she is captured and brought to a zoo. She is shocked to see Devlyn and knows the newspapers must have reported their find. She also knows where Devlyn is, Volan isn't far behind. To complicate matters, because of her rejection of Volan, a band of rogues is killing redheaded women in their search for Bella. Bella and Devlyn are brought face to face to discover their feelings for one another and decide how to stop the killing. Looming over them is the fear of Volan and what he will do when he has his hands on Bella again. Heart of the Wolf has a little more romance than I like but it should appeal to romance readers everywhere. |
