This is a classic work of spirituality from one of the greatest minds of the 20th Century. It is something you will read and meditate on for many years - and it will still be providing fresh insights and substantial spiritual nourishment.

Spiritual and literary masterpiece,
By sculpting/time (Indianapolis, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Heart of the World (Paperback)
Totally agree with the previous reviewer: this book is both immensely challenging on a spiritual level and a beautiful work of art on the literary level. How von Balthasar takes in all sorts of materials and reproduces them in his own work lends this book an allusive depth that is stunning. I think particularly here of reworking biblical passages, such as "I am the vine, you are the wine that I have wept," and the moving, imaginative exposition of despair from Judas' point of view. There is also an unexpected reworking of Augustine in the conclusion that should remain a surprise. The most important thing about this work, however, is that it will open you to God.
I am profoundly thankful that this work exists, and for Erasmo Leiva for translating it so well.
