5.0 out of 5 stars Native Flute Virtuoso
Mary's exceptional talent on Native American Flute is unsurpassed by her contemporaries. The song "Unrequited" even has a hint of Irish flavor. Coupled with Joanne Shenandoah on vocals, this album is sure to please both those familiar and those unfamiliar with this remarkable instrument. And there is no description for the enchanting sound of her double flute...

3.0 out of 5 stars A review of Mary's CS
I am a Native American flute player and I must say that although Mary's melodies were good, the combination of her flute with the rest of the instruments made the music sound like elevator music. I think it would have been a better CD without the instruments

Coupled with Joanne Shenandoah on vocals, this album is sure to please both those familiar and those unfamiliar with this remarkable instrument. And there is no description for the enchanting sound of her double flute playing. With a history that stretches back over 3000 years, the Native Flute has found a new foothold for the next mellinium with Mary Youngblood.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly a flutist who expresses the native spirit, October 25, 2001

I have actually met Mary Youngblood. I attended a concert and workshop that she gave. Her music is inspiring. Her ability is amazing. Her songs that of the great spirit that inspires her. I have both of her cds (one signed by her) and can't wait for her next one. I love her use of just the flute with little background (usually a guitar and or other voices). It is pure and makes me remember my native heritage. It makes me proud to be native american.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Feminine Flute, May 28, 2002
By
Harusami "Harusami" (Denver, CO United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Heart of the World (Audio CD)
The first time I heard Mary Youngblood's music I was browsing in my favorite metaphysical shop when I heard the most soul-stirring Native American flute music wafting through the store. The music sounded so different from what I had heard before, there was a gentleness, a nurturing feminine spirit to an instrument mainly played by men in the past. I immediately hunted down a shop employee to inquire about the music being played and bought "Heart of the World" that day. I was later honored to meet Mary Youngblood at a workshop she taught, and I know that this delightful woman is truly inspired by Spirit. I also recommend her CD "The Offering", her first CD is simply her and her instrument hauntingly played in a cave. Pure, contemplative and beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely the best, November 22, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Heart of the World (Audio CD)
This is the Native American flute at it's best, played by a person who pours her soul into her music. The sense of melody is like nothing i've heard before on NA Flute. If you haven't heard Mary Youngblood play, you haven't heard how GREAT the NA Flute can sound! There should be a 10 star rating!

5.0 out of 5 stars RARE CD, March 6, 2001
By

This review is from: Heart of the World (Audio CD)
It is the first time I hear the flute player's breath between the notes, and I value the thought behind the decision to leave the sound in. This is a beautiful, rare CD, where all sounds are made by voice and instruments that are identifiable, as opposed to the synthesizer sounds of many contemporary native american artists. The CD is full of beauty and gentleness through strength, and it should please anyone who enjoys listening to R. Carlos Nakai's earlier, less artificially enhanced, music (such as Canyon Trilogy). I highly recommend it.

The mix of vocals, guitar, native percussion and flute surpass anything I have heard from any other Native flute artist. A full range of emotions is touched on by the skill of Mary Youngblood. From tears to joy, you gotta get this one!

This is quite simply my new favorite music. I put on Ms. Youngblood's music when I'm feeling overwhelmed, and in no time she's taken me to a place where I can see what's important and what's true, and the rest falls away to it's proper place. The sheer, lush, beauty of the music is a truth in itself. God bless her for sharing her art with the rest of us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Peaceful, December 1, 1999

I found this music soothing to the soul. The artist is adept at making images with her music. Images that at times feels spirited and at other times longingly remorseful. This is a wonderful piece of work and I am putting my order in now. Thank you for showing us a gentler side of life.
