Better than you might think, April 11, 2008
Ah, Winger. The poster boys for chick-friendly hair metal in the 80's. I think their fate was sealed when the wimpy neighbor kid Stuart - who always sported a Winger t-shirt - was introduced on MTV's Beavis and Butthead cartoon. I'll let you in on a little secret though: Winger was good, and I mean really good. Every member of the band was a highly skilled musician, and they had the perfect grasp of what made the late 80's melodic rock sound work.
1990's In the Heart of the Young was the band's sophomore album, and is a very solid melodic rock album. There's no "Seventeen" style hit single here (though I believe Miles Away charted at the time), but that's probably a good thing. I think that song ended up doing more harm than good to the band's reputation. Instead you've got an album with almost no filler, which is a rarity. Little Dirty Blonde and Loosen Up are probably my least favorite tracks, but just about everything else is very impressive melodic rock. It reminds me a lot of the first two Night Ranger albums, in that it's just one great melodic song after another.
If you're an 80's rock fan, you really need to get this album. Forget what you think you know about Winger (especially if it's primarily the video for Seventeen). They're a better band than anyone thinks.
NOTE: Wounded Bird reissued this album in 2005. The reissue does not include any bonus material, and it has not been remastered, so if you have an older copy of the album there's no need to replace it.

Another Amazing Winger Album!!!, February 1, 2009
Winger needs no introduction. The most misunderstood and underrated band of the 80's. Thanks to Lars Ulrich's bulldog slobbering whining (I think personally most people were jealous of Kip because all the women loved him) and Beavis and Butthead, Winger was the joke of all 80's rock. Well time has passed and Winger has had a huge resurgence in both sales and in young fans, especially young guitarists after Reb Beach's amazing guitar work. Wingers Sophomore album is another groove riffed rock album with tons of great songs! The lyrics are more mature and its a long way, away from there self titled debut.
Can't Get Enuff - I remember listening to this song on the radio. When I rediscovered this album I totally remember every single lyric and though to myself... I forgot Winger sang this song! Great song with that patented Rod Morgenstein drum sound filling your ears.
Loosen Up - This is just a fun song. Winger sounds amazing playing this song live. Great solo by Reb Beach in this song.
Miles Away - Boy oh boy I don't know where to start with this song. I don't know if its the lyrics, the music, or the music video that makes this song just so amazing. Anyone going through a breakup, watch this video, listen to this song. Great song written by Paul Taylor showing that time heals all wounds but memories will always be there forever. The video by the way has a twist in the ending that is amazing. A song telling you letting go is ok.
Easy Come Easy Go - Another radio hit that I totally forgot about. This is one those 80's rock songs where you see all the hot girls grooving to. Fun song, great groove, and of course Reb Beach!
Rainbow in the Rose - I don't know if this song has anything to do with the novel written with the same title (a man who finds out his love interest is actually his long lost daughter from a previous affair that he never knew about) but this is one of my favorite songs of all time. Great Power Ballad, extremely melodic, Reb Beach's voice is amazing on this song. This is one of the more progressive based songs from Winger and also one of there longest. Amazing song, and its amazing live!!!
In The Day We'll Never See - I love this song. Very dark song, great lyrics, great guitar playing, and very melodic. I think this is one of Wingers finest songs.
Under One Condition - Not one of my favorites but I love the guitar solo and how the song digresses after the solo. Just another 80's ballad. The song starts off boring to me but it picks up and gets going after the first verse.
Little Dirty Blonde - Kind of a bluesy, groove based track. I usually can do without this song.
Baptized By Fire - This song starts with a great 2 handed tap solo by Reb Beach on the acoustic guitar. This is an amazing song. Another Melodic 80's rocker. Kip's voice is great on this song. This another one of those Winger songs with the classic groove Wingers know for.
You are the Saint, I am the Sinner - LOVE THIS SONG!!! Such a fun song! Melodic and powerful guitar playing. Another one of the songs that I am sure the girls got down to when Winger played shows.
In The Heart of the Young - Great Ballad. I love how the album ends with this song. Starts of very slow but turns into a Power Ballad really quick. Good song with Reb Beach tearing up the fretboard.
