If you're going to write an enjoyable Western romance novella, and you're not going to go for an NC-17 rating to entertain your readers, what are you going to do? Well, you need to get the reader to quickly care about your characters; you need old-fashioned sparks, you know, chemistry -- yeah, chemistry; you need the story to be fun and feel good; and a little danger doesn't hurt. "Heart of Gold" has all that, so I liked it.

I'm knocking off a star because I didn't need to be told over and over again, when Opal and Charlie first meet, that she only wants money for the children (Charlie doesn't know that yet, but the reader gets hit over the head with it). There is some similar repetitiveness and heavy-handedness here and there, but the story moves well, and though I winced at Charlie's final words (even in jest), I ended up glad I gave this little book a chance.

The proofreading and formatting are good (except for a few hyphens where dashes should be) and so do not distract and detract from the story.

The only thing I didn't like about this book is that it wasn't longer. Williams is an excellent author and this was the sweetest romance. I would have loved to see these characters in a full length book! Great read!

This is a delightful romance with a bit of danger thrown in. Charlie and Opal have no intention of falling in love, but their misadventures bring them together in tempting ways.

I thoroughly enjoyed this short book, and though I don't usually read romances, I highly recommend it.
