A laugh riot and quite a tip of the hat to the very best of the JRPG genre. I even love the fake "bad english translation" ... it is HILARIOUS!

JRPGs are my favorite genre of adventure game. This does not disappoint. I have already played this game to death these last few months. Truly, truly fun and clever!

Maybe I am lucky but it runs stable for me on multiple devices. Issues may be Kindle-specific? I am not sure but I run it fine on a Tegra2 tablet, a Bionic and a Nexus 7 developer edition.

Absolutely 5 stars. Wonderfully fun game you just have to play to fully appreciate. Words don't do it justice.

Speaking of words, the game does contain some language and some use of alcohol and some sexual innuendos and such, whereas I would probably rate it at about PG-13. Just a heads up-- you probably don't want small children playing this without you at least looking at it yourself first and deciding if it's OK for them to play. This game is definitely aimed at adults with a bent sense of humor (like me, haha!)

And best of all? NO adware. NO spyware. NO analytics. NO IAP. Just a great, great game. Oh and the music scoring and soundtrack is superb!

BONUSES: Make sure to explore the advanced options because you can change the lighting effects and performance of the game to better suit the device.

ALSO (and this is great) I remembered that I have a wired XBOX 360 controller so I grabbed it and plugged it in to my Tegra 2 tablet (A Toshiba Thrive running ICS) with a USB port. The controller fired right up, the game recognized it instantly and it works PERFECTLY with the controller! So now I am playing it on my big screen TV through HDMI with an XBOX 360 controller-- it is awesome!

Doom & Destiny is both a parody of and a loving homage to the Japanese RPGs of the 1980s and '90s. Some of the earlier reviews mention that the game is unstable, but I'm running version, and I've got 13 hours in without seeing any glitches. The gameplay is very faithful to the turn-based RPGs of the NES and SNES era, and it's filled with allusions and inside jokes to games of the past. You have opportunities to control numerous aspects of your characters' development, including equipment, statistics, and active skills.

The plot is a lot of fun. Four nerdy guys from the present are sucked into an alternate fantasy world, which they have a lot of knowledge of from their days of role-playing. For better or worse, your enjoyment of this plot is going to be depend largely on your tolerance for juvenile humor. The game has a lot of cursing and a lot of toilet jokes. Some of them are funny and match their characters. But at times it gets a little exhausting and detracts from the more intelligent references.

The controls aren't very intuitive. You use the left side of the screen for directional movements and menu selections, and the right side of the screen to actually operate those commands. You get used to it very quickly, but I had some trouble navigating with my characters. I can't count how many times I've walked right back through the door or staircase I'd just entered, solely because the controls were being wonky.

But those are small complaints. You're getting a great game with a lot of humor and a lot of nostalgia for a tiny percentage of an old console RPG. I can't recommend this to everyone -- children probably shouldn't play the game because of all the crass humor and sexual innuendo.

Update 1/25/2014, This game is good for fans of turn-based RPGs (see my original review below). The controls work on this game, but are unintuitive and don't follow typical touch screen conventions. You can NOT navigate menus or move characters by touching menu items or places on the screen. You must do the following.
_1. Use the left half of the screen as a joystick. To do this, place your finger on the screen and then, while maintaining contact with the screen, move your finger up to move up, OR move your finger down to move down, etc.
_2. Use the right side of the screen as an action button. For example, once you've selected a menu item using the left side of the screen, tap the right side of the screen to activate that menu item.
_3. Open and close menu screens while playing by sliding your finger across the screen horizontally from left to right.
_This is so different from the standard touch screen approach that it is confusing at first. Especially because you navigate the splash screen using techniques 1 & 2 above to start the new game before you get to a tutorial that explains all this. Once you get used to this system it works fine.

This app has some mature content. Beer and alcohol are referenced and available as items. There are references to sex. Nothing totally out of line, but not good for little kids who probably wouldn't get all the references to classic RPGs.

Original Review Written 12/1/2013: Doom & Destiny is a fun parody of a traditional rpg with turn-based fighting. In this game you control a party of four current day gamers who are thrown into a magical fantasy world and sent on quests. This parody makes a lot of amusing references to old rpg games and fantasy rpg tropes--this got me chuckling at times.
