4.0 out of 5 stars An Expert Fusion of Bluegrass and Country February 15, 2011
Format:Audio CD
As a singer, songwriter, and guitarist, Charlie Sizemore has proven adept at both country and bluegrass music. He explores both styles on Heartache Looking For a Home.

Sizemore spent nine years as a member of Ralph Stanley's band, The Clinch Mountain Boys. Sizemore acknowledges the influence of both Ralph Stanley and The Stanley Brothers with three superb versions of songs from their catalogs. Sizemore recorded "Red, Wicked Wine" during his days with Ralph Stanley. This new version, on which Stanley sings tenor, finds them as perfectly-matched as ever, with Stanley echoing Sizemore's bottled-up lonesomeness. "Poor Rambler" and "Going to Georgia" come from The Stanley Brothers' songbook. The former gets a loose, old-timey feel, courtesy of Danny Barnes' banjo, while the latter is pure bluegrass at breakneck speed.

The title track, from the Osborne Brothers repertoire, finds a wary Sizemore warning off a girl who's bad news. The tempo and the picking echo the skittish lyrics nicely.

Sizemore's aching baritone allows him to interpret country songs with both skill and soul. On "No Lawyers In Heaven," Sizemore, a practicing attorney, prays, "May there be no lawyers in heaven" after a legal shark confiscates his belongings as payment for services rendered.

It wouldn't be a Charlie Sizemore record without heartbreak songs, and he tackles a couple of notable ones here. Alan Jackson's "Walking the Floor Over Me" benefits from bluegrass timing and Sizemore's trademark wistfulness. Sizemore's treatment of "I Don't Remember Loving You" is pure country without the glitz. He's utterly convincing as a man trying to recover from a bruising relationship. The wry lyrics beg the question: Is he literally insane, or just getting his last licks in by telling his ex that he would have had to be insane to ever love her?

Sizemore has a real affinity for the songs of Tom T. Hall, which he displays brilliantly on the CD's most powerful track, "Pay No Attention to Alice". Sizemore's voice breaks in all the right places as he sings of a man whose wife is in the late stages of alcoholism. With memories of a war he'd rather not talk about, and a wife who's only bodily present, it's only a matter of time the man's own alcoholism overtakes him.

With one of the most lonesome voices in bluegrass, Charlie Sizemore expertly combines country and bluegrass, imbuing each with the deep longing of a Heartache Looking For a Home.
