Book Description

March 1, 2007
Hearbeat for Horses is a collection of writing and photographs brought together in honor of horse crazy girls - those who might only live in the fantasy world of books and porcelain statues, who pin posters onto their walls and dream of jumping like National Velvet, or who actually compete in rodeos and horse shows in an attempt to win that blue ribbon. Writer/editor Laura Chester has selected a brilliant array of prose and poetry that is paired with the evocative photography of Donna DeMari who captures the heartfelt connection between girls and horses. DeMari and Chester together have created an equestrian dream, with selections and pictures that give us a glimpse into this special, secret world. Their collection is sure to inspire young riders and to touch the hearts of horse lovers everywhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for horse lovers of all ages....., May 19, 2007
This review is from: Heartbeat for Horses (Hardcover)

This book is a horse lover's dream, especially if you are a horse crazy girl like I was. Laura Chester's exceptional prose melds gloriously with Donna DeMari's breathtaking photography of horses and the girls who ride them. As an added bonus, Chester included quotes from poets and writers who revere horses. I was pleased to find excerpts from favorite books and writers of my horse-loving youth -- Marguerite Henry, James Herriot, Anna Sewell -- and poetic paeans by Lyn Lifshin and Ted Hughes, to name only a few.

This excerpt from "My Life With Horses" by Chester sets the book's tone ideally:

"We loped through the fields, our pajama pants blowing. With moonlight tipped on the horse's manes and our blonde hair, we were ghost riders, flashing primeval, almost weightless on our invisible saddles. It seemed mysteriously right to be riding, forbidden, and the horses too were casting their spells."

"Yearlings in the Pasture" by Lyn Lifshin captures the spirit and joy of horses, and why humans love them:

no responsibility, just play
in the grass in a rose wind,
a butterfly wind. Before
harnesses, before shoes....

There are too many fine stories and poems in this book to cover in a review. And unfortunately, I can't reproduce the photographs that accompany each poem and story. DeMari's work is sensual perfection, memorializing both horse and rider. My compliments to Chester and DeMari. The result of their collaboration is delightful and beautiful. I enthusiastically recommend this book for readers of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very special blending of image and text, May 7, 2007
This review is from: Heartbeat for Horses (Hardcover)
Compiled and co-edited by Laura Chester and Donna DeMari, "Heartbeat For Horses" is a compilation of impressive photographs combined engaging commentaries about girls and horses. The quotations and commentaries are drawn from forty-two writers that range from Chief Buffalo Cjhild Long Lance, to E. E. Cummings, to Charles Dickens, to James Herriot, to D.H. Lawrence, to Theodore Roosevelt. A very special blending of image and text, "Heartbeat For Horses" is particularly recommended reading for equine enthusiasts in general, any girl or woman who feels a special affection for the horse in particular.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sidesaddle enthusiasts, take note!, July 13, 2008
By
This review is from: Heartbeat for Horses (Hardcover)
There isn't much that can be added to the first two reviews except to note that this book contains a rare display of sidesaddle. As a sidesaddle enthusiast I am always looking for any instance of promotion or documentation of this discipline. Leafing through this book, you will find a chapter which begins with a picture of an elementary school-aged child in a white lace-trimmed burgundy dress. Your first thought will be that it must be some kind of special occasion, but you will then notice that there is no stirrup nor rider's leg on the off side. Further in the chapter Demari catches the entire group riding. These little girls are all evenly matched in their frilly dresses, travelling at a high rate of speed, perfectly balanced, and completely comfortable in their sidesaddles. How I wish I had grown up like this!
