A few weeks back I realized, "Hey, its October, I wonder if Electric Six are gonna release another album soon..." since they have put out an album a year for the last several years, most of which drop in the fall sometime. Sure enough, I was right, and soon afterwards I had my copy of "Heartbeats & Brainwaves" in my hand.
It says a lot about a band when I can predict (accurately, mind you) when their next album is coming out by what time of year it is. Here are e6 on their EIGHTH album in EIGHT years, and they've yet to make anything less than a very good album and they always bring something new to the table.
For those unfamiliar, Electric Six are a band that mixes dance, rock, and a stew of other styles together into an intoxicating party groove. They do so with a flair for the bombastic and ridiculous, though never so much as to slip into novelty territory. Dick Valentine's lyrics will make you grin if not outright laugh (from this album: "69 dudes just to get you in the mood/I've got some issues with your style, girl"), the music is layered and well composed enough to merit repeated listening, and they're always just plain FUN to listen to.
Like last year's "Zodiac" album, "Heartbeats & Brainwaves" continues their shift away from loud guitars, but also slips quite a bit deeper into electronic areas. You'll hear more than the usual amount of synths and programmed drums. Some may be fine with the shift, but others (including my wife) might wonder where the rock went. Its still a good album though, with plenty of disco beats and dance tempos. The music is still gloriously busy and layered, so I'm looking forward to picking out all the bits and pieces on repeated listens.
But more important than any stylistic changes are the songs themselves, and band frontman and creative mastermind Tyler "Dick Valentine" Spencer certainly hasn't run out of steam on that front. There are plenty of catchy, interesting melodies to latch on to. My personal favorites are the title track, "Hello! I See You!" and "It Gets Hot" but those three are far from the only good tracks on here.
BOTTOM LINE: Long time fans will be happy to hear e6 is still going strong, as this is a very good new album, though it is much more dance than rock. New people may want to start with "Senor Smoke" but no matter which album they hear first, they'll have something to like, as e6 has been very consistant with their high quality, high fun music.
