This CD is not one of Doug Dillards best efforts, but it is still a treat to listen to. Ginger Boatwright is great singing in her bluesy way on the title track Heartbreak Hotel. Doug Dillard excells on G-String Boogie, Banjo playing just doesn't get any better than this!!. My favorite track has to be The Angels Sing In Heaven, that one makes me cry.

Doug Dillard's best albums are Heaven and Jackrabbit from 1979 and 1980 respectively. Unfortunately, this 1988 release is the only one still in print. It's a pleasant enough album, but it doesn't have the fire of his earlier work. Most of the vocal chores are handled by guitarist Ginger Boatwright (including a stab at "Heartbreak Hotel"). Doug--whose voice is fairly thin--limits himself to one vocal, the closing track "Too Much in Love With You."

"With Pain in My Heart" and the Jim and Jesse classic "Hard Hearted" are enjoyable; however, the two instrumental showpieces are the album's standout tracks. But while "Banjo on the Mountain" and "G-String Boogie" give Dillard and lead guitarist David Grier a chance to display their skills, the rest of the album never offers much to get real excited about. It really makes me wonder why this is the album Flying Fish chooses to keep in print. My suggestion is to first purchase the Dillards' anthology There Is a Time and then seek out the other two solo albums mentioned earlier. This one is for hard-core fans.
